Default Insurance getting me down!

Right... think i need advice!

Im 18 goin on 19 and would you believe... want an rst series 1!
Ive looked into all the methods,

- Insure it in your dads name and you as a named driver.
Ive tried that and the cheapest i can get is like 2500 which is shit and too much. Liverpool vic wont even insure me htrew this method. Then theres the other method...

- Buy a shitter and insure fully comp with a company like hastings direct. Theyll insure on anything else third party and so on...
Do you know of any other companies which do this, for say cheaper, because for example liverpool victoria wont let you drive anything else third party with u being under 25 and everything?

And after all that, is there any other methods or just good companies to use, whats your insurance and policys and stuff? thanx

Aye, i think they have all clamped down since febuary or summit, because i remember getting insured on a rst in my dads name on liverpool vic back then, but now not a chance!

Its a real shame....

Liv Vic quoted me under £400 on my S1 with a zero no claims bonus on it (new policy)

It made no difference that I have 2 more policys with them all at full protected NCB discount either.

I think you need to lie about your age (joke before you try it)

PS the rallycar is under £200 just to rub it in even more

you tried HIC from in performance ford.. my 1st car was an xr2 at 18!!! And i got a top deal.. and you could get the S1 on classic insurance so ud be sound with that...

also limit ur miles, tell em ur gonn do 4k a year or sumfin daft, and then just disconnect the spedo cable (screws into the top of gearbox on a ib5)

Right, just ran a quote with HIC with my dad being policy holder and me off course being a named driver and i quote,
"they will not insure us as its an RS Turbo!" So again i dunno. You know of any good classical insurance companies available.... Im running out of options....

I got my first RST (S1) when I was 20, and it was £1450 TPF&T to insure it with 1yrs NCB in my own name. My next one a couple of years later cost £650 TPF&T (3yrs NCB, in own name)

Inuring a car in your dads name with you as name driver does work, sometimes, but insurers are not stupid and if daddy has been driving 1.8 litre Rovers for the past 10yrs and suddenly decides to buy an Escrot RS Turbo and add his 18 yr old son on the policy, they smell a rat Also you won't earn any NCB so in 5yrs down the line you will still be having the same problem

And the "insure a shitter fully comp then you can drive any other car" doesn't work, as the car you will be driving needs to be insured by someone else. Ie : you insure a 1litre Fez fully comp (in your situation thats proabbaly gonna still be £600+) and then youhave to get someone else to insure the RST. Probelem with that is if someone else is insuring the RST then it will need to be their name on the logbook, and not yours. So technically you won't even own the car

both of the methods you sugested above are not legal, as there will be fine print in the policy which forbids what youre doing, making your insuranc void, meaning you dont have insurance.

and yes i know everybody does it, but when they come to claim... you're fucked

i'm sorry but it will cost a lot to insure, end of... ive been there, done that, and have debts to show for it... but i did it legally and now have some NCB and can finally get instred for sensible money

The thing is if i dont find any other methods i may have to wait untill im older with NCB or could still try the "drive any other car tpf+t". I pay my dads insurance on the rs and i drive it. Im not bothered whos name appears on the log book and all that, because the car will be put in my dads name anyway. If i get insured that way, well isnt it worth it?....

Right ive been thinking hard and ive decided if i give myself a years NCB then im gonna have i much beeter chance in the future. So for know im gonna get something like an 1.6 si which i can get insured on in my own name for a reasonable price. Probably the best way, i dont really want to end up in shit when it comes to claiming and all that (chances are high )

Thanks for the advice anyway...

is this your first car by the way?

by the way the 1.6 Si is still a high ins group (13 iirc, RST only 15)

you want a KA or a 1.1 Fezze or an Uno or something!

s my 1st car was an XR3i (1 grp up from Si)... i payd 3K Thirt Party Only (not even fire n theft) and most quotes were 5k+ that was about 3 1/2 years ago

You can't insure a cheap car fully comp, and drive your S1 third party. The S1 must not be owned by you, and it's actual owner must also have insurance etc.

You can't do it that way.

I think you're either going to have to pay the top money, or don't buy an S1.

God, i love being old. I insured the XR2 turbo for £300 fully comp......

but, my first car (shitty orion) cost me £1200 to insure third party only. twice the cost of the car. But, by the time I was 20 I got the RST for 900 fully comp. 3 years NCB etc.

Well im currently drivin a beast (some of you may disagree ) a 1.3 l Reg 3 door escort. Its my second car as i crashed my last 1.4i escort and im currently insured as an added driver with my dad on LV for 313.00. The frustating thing is I have enough money to purchase an RST right now but im gonna have to pay like 3K to gett it insured which is taking the piss abit....

So im thinking thebest way is to maybe like build up 2 years NCB or summit, wot you rekon...

If your not bothered about whos name is on hte log book and want to pay your dads insurance on it then go ahead. But expect to pay 600-1000 for the fully comp insurance on your "shitter" and then another not cheap policy for your dad aswell. You might aswell do it in your own name and be done with it.

Or just realise the fact is, when you are young you can't insure perfromance cars very easily, or cheaply. There is a reason the prices are what they are. Mainly cos young kids in fast cars die a hell of a lot quicker due to inexpirience.

The best way to do it is start off low. Then move a little higher, then a little higher etc (example. Start with a 1litre Fex, then next year a 1.4 Si, then next year an XR3i, then next year an RST, then next year a COssy, etc)

Insurers like that as they look at the history and see you have progressed "up the ladder" and that you have a history of cars getting quicker and quicker so you are less of a risk.....

Nice one Rab... Good advice buddy!!

We've all been there and started with an old banger/small engine car then built up to performance models as we get older with more ncb.

To get a cheap quote for driving under your parents name you are going to have to incorrectly declare your parent as the main driver of the vehicle, in addition the vehicle would have to be owned and registerred to them.

Insurers have started to do what they're always supposed to be doing and have finally started to become increasingly sophisticated and alert to this (ie. LV). They should be requesting details of other cars that your parent owns and will also look at the profile of your parent and the vehicle they drive.

If you do manage to wangle a policy on this basis, you will be earning NCB for your parent and not yourself. Then if the Insurer realises their error and kicks you at renewal you will be out on your ear and having to start from Zero NCB - probably with a performance car by then.

Or, lets say you get away with it for several years - when you move out and buy your own house or want to do your own policy for what is likely to be a sports car by then. It will catch up with you then .

Your best bet is as Jim and Rab say, start with something basic for a year or 2 then move up. There is no shame in this, everyone's been there buddy.

Then when you're 21 with a year's bonus - give me a call .

Kind regards

Tony

I got my S2 (the one I have now ) when I was 19 and it cost me £850 to insure TPFT and that was 10 years ago My bro paid £1600 to insure his FRST at 19 with 2yrs NCB.

You may find you will have to wait another year and build up some NCB on a snotter.

ok the insure ion ya parents name never works unless ya use there no claims and they base it on the highest risk driver and have done for over 5 years

getting to drive other cars on ya licence no place will do it with less than 1 years no claims and most require to be over 25 but some so it at 21 though, but that cant be in your name, the other problem with that is getting it taxed, there are ways round it though

both are not illegal and you wont be fucked if ya have half a brain, these people who state that dont speak from experience but speak from talking to a bloke down the pub, reading about it on the ent or are just talking bollox

ive been using another car ocasionally for comming up to 2 years soon and never had a issue, infact it works great for avoiding totting up points if ya get a person who dont drive anymore and just pay the fine

but at your age for ya own sake as theres no way round this i wouldnt bother, get a nice clean car and build up ya no claims as i hate giving money to the robbing insurance tossers ( no offence ment at you tony, just feel that if i payed 4k for year and i never claimed i should get a 3k refund as im not that shit driver ya was unsure of )

belive the citreon AX is cheep to insure and is quite nippy, tbh big bhp cars are about top speed and not just acceleration too

infact i drive a micra as a runabout at work but ive got access to a murano or a 350z or any other demo car but i use the micra as its more fun in mill hills high street traffic and has a better turning circle

ginge, i'll repeat my statement...

insuring a cabriolet fully comp cheap and driving a sierra cosworth thats owned by you and registered in your missus name under the "drive any car" clause of your policy is NOT and i repeat NOT in the T&C of your insrance, therefore your insurance is VOID therefore you are driving with no insurance and this is ILLEGAL.

also having a car on the public highway which is not insured is ALSO illegal

oh, and not forgetting, WHAT IF IT GETS NICKED?

if it was perfectly the norm, then how come it costs say 3k to insure a cossie TPFT but 500quid to insure a metro FC with drive any cars, where in your world your 500quid insuranc policy lets you drive literally ANY car TPFT for justa 500quid premium

it dont take a fooking rocket scientist to work it out does it

tony, please back me up on this one, ive been trying for years

my first car was a 1360cc diesel 106, that was 3ish years ago and also paid £1300 for my first years insurance at 18... so imo an S1 is well out of the question unless you are willing to pay more than the car! plus im guessing you have a crash on your record which will not help you at all!!!

im gonna repeat whats been said above and tell you to slow down. the other option is to get an S1 anyway, and restore it then when yo ucan afford the insurance you have a spot bollock car that you know inside and out?

I insured my rst at the age of 23 for 350 quid...

ok it was 1995!!! lol

my advice would be to stump up or wait and run around in something cheaper untill your no claim and age build up, it's what we had to do back in the day..
me and my m8s had to run round in orion ghia I's as an xr3i was too expensive to insure!

Either drive a shitter to build NCB for a couple years, or stump up the high premiums and stop whinging

Your young and male with fuck all driving experience. What did you expect?? £2.5k is cheap for a person your age for an RST.

Just get over it and cough up

im 19 i passed my test in september 2008 - ive got an escort 1989 1.3l bonus - rs turbo replica...brought it with my own money, the car is under my name im the only named driver on it, got insured for £1700 from zurich - i wanted to get an rs turbo but it was just sooo expensive which isnt worth it..was quoted something like 3grand or something crazy like that!...which is madness..

it looks the business thou...gets away for being an rs turbo all the time..i just dont rip it

my advice - i kno its soo hard 2 not have the car that you want..but just just get a crappy car..wait till your 21 and then it'll go down loads...get the car under your own name...its worth it in the long term! - and in the meanwhile if you can afford it get your s1 and just work on it!

good luck with whatever you decide to do!!
