Wuld u buy a car NOT from the registered keeper?
Hi Guys,
A best mate of mine is about to buy a Mk1 Focus RS. We went and saw a nice one in Fife and put a deposit down on it. (here is the advert on autotrader) http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk...icleRegLetter=
It is a good car that seems to have plenty of history from way down south. He bought the car in december 2008 on 79,400 miles. We asked how long he had had the car "Aye, I have had it quite a while, am just not using it and need to release some cash"
The number plate (A private plate and the V5 away awaiting return after retaining plate) belongs to his nephew as the name it resembles is clearly NOT his? The V5 (only the photocopy of the front and back page of the v5 was available) was in another womans name Mrs XYXYX in another address over on the west coast region. So we cannot prove the car is his. We then call back and ask how we can meet the registered keeper as we want to buy the car from the registered keeper. Not someone who, on paper, has no association with the car. He then tells us it is his ex-wives car and he wants to sell it as he has bad memories from it all and he had bought it for her. We then say, well can we meet her and we are not allowed to meet her.
I just wanted to know if you lads recognised the car, knew if it was Kosher and what you would do if you were shown that the V5 was not in the name of the person in front of you and you will never get to meet the person whose name is on the V5.
Feels a bit worrying as it is a nice motor and we really want to buy it!!! Hoping you lads can advise!
Cheers,
Steven_RW

Plenty more FRS's out there, i'd walk away. I know it's tough, I mentally buy a car when I view it before really looking into in. Sounds way too dodgy to me.

sounds a bit dodgy to me, i dont think the dvla would accept a photocopy v5 and if the proper v5 is on its way back to him hows he wanting to legally put the car in your name? is he waiting for the proper one to come back before he sells?
#4
Yeah - he had already sent the V5 away to get his cherished plate retained. So all he had was a photocopy of the V5 and it was only the far outside covers, not the inside details. The name on the V5 photcopy was not his name, nor shared the same second name as him. Just feels a bit strange. I didn't think you could buy a car from someone, if their name was not on the log book?!
Cheers!

What if his ex-wife legally owns the car-did you HPI it? She could have the finance owing on it and them arguing over it
Too many alarm bells wouldn't like to get stung with it
If he had the V5 back in his name is the only way i'd go further

Dreamer: totally agree. We checked the hpi and the car is clear. I think we agree that we cannot buy the car till he gets the v5 back in his name or we meet her and buy the car from her (with proof of her identity).
Why can't these things be easy lol!

The link doesn't work for me???
I saw a post on here about 2 weeks ago of a car matching that description that had been clocked, I'm sure it was from that general area aswell, i'll try and do a search to see if i can find it again, or maybe you've seen the post and it's not the same car???

I know its a pain in the ass mate you see a mint car and you just want it but trust me from a previous experience when you buy a motor make sure you are 100% happy with the car!! if your not happy with the car walk away and if its something minor like rust or dents etc you can haggle but thats not the point im getting at here cos that bits can all be fixed but people knocking on your door asking for the car back cos its on hpi or something isnt a thing you want lol or finding out its a ringer or worse a write off lol!!
if i was you i would just walk away if your not sure but if he comes up with a v5 and youve done the relevant history checks well fire on and happy motoring

Hi guys,
It is not the clocked car that you put a link up to.
If my autotrader link is not working, it is the blue with white door striped Focus RS in the fife region. It has light blue tinted windows too. Advertised for £7,500.
The mileage was showing as 79.4k in August last year (can be seen from receipts for work being carried out on the car), and was purchased in December this year. It now is showing just over 80k, so according to the mileage (and the condition of the car) I would say the mileage is fair and accurate. It is a really nice car and as far as I can see, we very much want to buy it. However I am picking up loud and clear that you cannot buy a car from someone if their name is not on the log book and you are never allowed to meet the person whose name IS on the log book…
We either need to meet her and buy the car from her (with photo id of who she is) or he needs to get the V5 put into his name and we can buy the car from him!
As soon as we get that sorted we can get on with this otherwise we might have to walk away.
Cheers,

I would walk fella, if frs's are fetching an average of 9k and this is 7500 for the same condition car then you have to wonder if it is cheap to entice the greedy.
You get sucked in by a the thought of grabbing a bargain and take a chance, that could cost you 7.5k

I am under no illusion the car 'is a bargain' I thought the price seemed quite realistic considering its 80k mileage? What would people expect to pay for an 80k mileage example?
Dan: I completely agree, we are worried that the real owner turns up and asks for their car back.
Will let you guys know where this goes from here.
Cheers!

We lost our deposit after walking away. We walked away as the amount of stories and lies we were told by the guy was insane. If I was to write it up here you would think I purposefully was trying to make it seem mad. You really would.
We were told that the deposit was non refundable and we had wasted his time, which was one of the funniest things I have ever heard. We WANTED the car and if he had played straight with us from the start we would have bought it once the V5 was sorted out. All the lies and varying stories give u such MEGA alarm bell moments that you just have to walk away. What annoys me is how the guy who lost the £200 deposit, doesn't have loads of money so it means alot to him. And we lost the deposit because the car seller told fibs, for whatever reason, but fibs.
BAH.

should not have left a deposit in the first place

...and risked losing (what seemed like) the ideal car?? Don't think so.
No matter what financial situation I was in, I'd rather write off £200 than potentially wank away £7k+ with no come-back when the 5/0 came to seize the car from me after the registered keeper found out that their car had been sold from under them by a bitter ex-partner.
Live and learn though, would be worth getting the number/details of any potential FRS your pal looks at and asking on the RSOC or FRS Owners Club and see if its a known car... alternatively, offer Chop what he paid for his so he can get the Impreza he's always wanted.
Cheers,
Grant

We left a deposit as it all stacked up nicely at the time. Nice car, relatively high mileage for that sort of car, so price seemed okay. Guy seemed like a good bloke. We met him at a nice house, had a couple of nice vans outside and so on. When you want to secure a car, u leave a deposit till u come up with the rest of the cash.
I personally reckon that the car is okay, it is just WHO is the real owner and why did we get told it was his, pride and joy, loves his Rs cars, always wanted one, had it for a long time etc, then it was his wife's car, then it was his ex-wives car and she was down in london and they had fallen out and he was selling it cos he had bad memories, and no we couldn't meet her and buy the car from her, he had already bothered her once to get her to call him, then it was his mates car, then his mates wives car and it had been traded in against another car that he sold. (can you believe that one person would tell that many stories?!?!)
The private number plate was a nephews, then it was a mates and so on and on and on.
It all stacked up fine (that number plate is clear on HPI as he showed us) till we got down to the nitty gritty of the V5 form and us not being willing to buy the car from someone whose name was not in the V5 or someone who didn't have a receipt of purchase for the car. Supposedly people buy cars all the time from someone if their name is not on the V5 (so we were told, and that is why I wanted to ask you lot if you had?). I can see me buying a car from a trader when it doesnt have his name on the V5 - that is to be expected, but not what at first seems like a private sale.
Read that story and then think that WE were the ones who lost out financially on the deposit and we were called timewasters.

We left a deposit as we knew where he lived, it seemed like there was plenty of money about. The car had loads of history, was HPI clear and he didn't have the V5 as he was getting the private plate taken off. That all seemed to stack up nicely.
Felt fine at the time. It was after handing over the deposit I started asking some more questions out of interest. All the weird stories started happening after we called back after leaving and just asked to clarify around the V5. From there it all turned into an Poirot moment!!!
Mad.
