Snooker cue tip selection.......
Ive just bought a cue from ebay and its come with a shite mushroomed tip which i want to remove and replace with a nice new item. The cue didnt come with any instructions as it was used so i dont know if theres a minimum size i can use. Ive seen some tips called Blue Diamond on Ebay which i think ill go for but i wondered if theres any limit to how small i can go. Anyone got any tips? (Excuse the pun)

If its a pool cue, you don't want it any bigger than 9mm, if its snooker you'll be playing, you might want it a little bigger to make your accuracy better.
Well i was thinking 9 - 9.5mm but like u say ill have to measure the tip of the cue. The one that is on there is too big for the tip of the cue hence why it is overlapping/mushroomed. Ill wait till i get home and have a measure up!!

Snooker cue tips will be 9 or 10mm as JP says. Blue Diamond tips all the way, then get a domer and grind it for about 5 hours till it's nice and thin with a nice shape and you'll be well away

Tips are a very personal thing tho. Depends on what the individual likes, like you said.
get one a mm bigger than your actual nib size, as often the tips arent exactly what they should be, also glueing them on dead centre is near impossible, then rub off the excess with sand paper, also dont forget to key the top of the que and the bottom of the tip or after a few shots it will pop straight of again.
I find a few shallow cuts with a kitchen knife does the job quite well

Well ive taken all that in and have decided that im gonna go for 9.5mm (as long as my ferrule accepts this, which it should), i think its needs to be as small as possible so u can hit a more precise area of the white. Might get a couple of each and see how i get on though
Nice one for the advice!!

I run a ground down 8.5mm tip, and wouldn't go bigger, as I like to be able to move the cue ball around a lot more than some larger tips will allow.
Best bet is to leave the cue in to be re-tipped, wont cost you much and the job gets done proper. Im off tonight to play pool and have a few nelson madelas.
Tips size is indeed personal to each player and there style of play as rich has said.

Not at all. The contact patch is the same whatever sized tip as you are hitting a sphere ( simple physics
, unless you use a tip with a perfect concave ) so the grip is dependant on the 'give' in the tip, with a bigger tip you need less give to get a bigger contact patch, ergo more grip. i have played since I was 11 and played in pool and snooker leagues for a number of years so I'm talking from experience not just speculating. Anyway in snooker/pool being happy and relaxed is much more important so if you are happy with your tip then you are halfway there no matter its size
I have also played for a number of years, and at the end of the day, the contact patch is smaller with a smaller tip.
Try and hit say 1 cm left of dead centre of the cue ball with a small tip, and now try the same with a larger tip.
You simply will not be hitting the same part of the ball.

No, of course not. But in the car scenario, only one of the surfaces is moving on contact, and your not talking about transference of energy...........
Now think back to your physics.
Remember your pressure/force/area equations...............
Remember the old analogy of the woman in a high heel...........
