MAD built 800+ hp 200+ mph Sierra sapphire cosworth
My new car currently in final stages of build before I take delivery of it.
an epic car that started my own personal journey on a quest for 1000 hp which I ended up getting a gtr with.
The Sierra was specced and built by rod tarry and mark Shead of madevelopments, sadly rod passed away in February 2018, so the start of this thread is all about documenting the history of the car and it's current build as best I can from information rod has put on his Facebook page
So let's start with the history first
in rods own words "
BRIEF HISTORY - It had been a dream for many years to build a very fast car. My son suggested a Sierra RS Cosworth as having good Tuning potential so the search began. In July 1996 I found & purchased an extremely clean Sapphire with a 330bhp M.A.Developments conversion. I contacted Mark Shead at MAD & asked for him to build a 400bhp engine as I thought that would be my dream car. I covered 9000 miles before the urge for more grunt returned. The result a 504bhp/492ft-lb conversion which required uprated brakes , Differential & a Tremec TKO gearbox to cope. This was a great engine & it managed runner-up at TOTB RWD section in 2002. Before 2002 came to a close the car had set a RS Cosworth RWD Topspeed record of 183.27mph it was a pleasant surprise. That record was beaten in 2003 so to regain it required more Power. A MAD 640bhp/530ft-lb conversion was fitted & with a 75 shot of Nitrous around 720bhp was available. On the 16/09/2004 at Bruntingthorpe with Mark at the wheel it became the first RS Cosworth on the planet to exceed 200mph running 201.8mph. I joined the 200mph club with a personal best of 201.3mph in early 2005. To push the record further a larger GT40/94 Turbo was fitted pushing Power to 680bhp & with a 100 shot of Nitrous it was enough to see the record raised to 206.1mph in August 2005. In 2015 that record still stands. We tried to break it on the TV program '5th Gear' in November 2005 but very damp conditions saw us fail with 206.0mph recorded despite running around 830bhp that day with a 150 shot of gas.
The development of a 800bhp engine started in 2006 but took some time to complete in December 2008 it made 838bhp/666ft-lb. This engine used a GT4202 turbo & ran as my road car for several years.
With the developments in Electronics & Turbo technology we are in 2015 starting to build a 900+bhp engine using a EFR 9180 Turbo & the latest Emtron KV8 Ecu its progress will be monitored on this page. Its hoped to run at a Vmax event in 2016 to try to push the Topspeed record to circa 212mph.

Instrument cluster, gauges and interior
Modified crank pulley
Titan dry sump being trialed fitted and hoses made
Boot install, water methanol injection pump, dry sump tank, nitrous bottle, battery relocate and spare wheel bolted above floor
25th may 2017 car comes out of garage for first time in 15 months ! We can all imagine the cost of all the parts, but it's the man hours that has really opened my eyes as I'm relaying this on here, huge amounts of work which rod did alot of himself

The car was delivered to spec r next to have the intercooler fitted and custom intercooler pipes, and exhaust downpipe altered to suit the efr 9180 turbo
Exhaust downpipe wrapped
Crank sensor, turbo oil feed, boost control and turbo speed sensors all fitted
Geometry all set up and engine getting close to first start up
that is now upto the last update on rods page before he passed away

Mark Shead then carried on with finishing the car off.
1400cc injectors and emtron kv8 ECU, passed mot with some excellent emission figures
Then while doing some mapping the tremec tko 500 transmission failed, but it had been in the car for 18 years and done 36000 miles so had done really well
a tremec tko 600 gearbox has now been fitted
The car is just having some final touches done and some different head studs fitted hopefully be on the Dyno in the new year and see what she makes

The car is currently fitted with a jaguar Salisbury diff, ratio 3.54 which gives a theoretical top speed of 224 mph by my calculations, so I've had a hint around and there is a performance jaguar specialist that retro fits the newer ratio crown wheel and pinions into the older casings
Can get a 4.09 to give an approximate top speed of 192 mph which will be alot more suitable for point to point and drag racing, considering buying one so I have both options available to me
those speed assume 8500 rpm and a decent size tyre on the rear

Glad you started this thread on such a legend of a car in the Ford scene.
Sometimes Rod came across as a funny bigger on here but a few times when I met him he was such a nice man to talk to.
Looking forward to the Progress on this car.

He gave me some advice that I've followed and appreciated he also gave me a calc on 3.9 gearing I remember on 19's (frs mk2) with 700+ 190's mph looks to tie in roughly with your calcs carl

I might even look at a 4.55 aswell, gotta get the car and see how it feels to me with some v box pulls and go from there on the 3.54, I think potentially even a 4.55 might be good, 150-160 mph flat out it will have huge acceleration if it will grip

Just doing some more gearspeeds with a more sensible 8000 rpm limit
235/35/18 aren't available in r888s so I'm going to assume I will have to run a 225/40/18
3.54 diff is 206 mph
4.09 diff is 178 mph
4.55 diff is 160 mph
So I think if I'm going to have one the 4.55 will be best, and it will bring first gear down from 59 mph to 46 mph
160 mph at 8000 rpm is 20 mph each 1000 rpm, so 70 mph at 3500 rpm isn't to bad either for cruising

On the 4.55 1st 46 mph, 2nd 69 mph, 3rd 102 mph, 4th 131 mph, 5th 160 mph
On the 4.09 1st 51 mph, 2nd 77 mph, 3rd 114 mph, 4th 146 mph, 5th 178 mph
that's assuming the box has the 0.82 overdrive
and working on 8000 rpm mate

Got some pics of the roll cage rod had fitted in the car, perfect for me aswell as I'm the same as rod in that its a road car and needs to seat 5 people.
it looks like it will do that just fine, and nice and tucked in behind the dash, perfectamundo

my my feeling is the 4.09 is better suited for the road most of the time as I expect it to make max power from 7k all the way to 8500rpm if we rev it that high so the natural tendency in my driving style would be to change at 7k most of the time when on it and using the extra revs for overtaking or long corners where holding the revs is needed.

I was thinking we could have the softest possible limiter at 8500 rpm but I will always aim to shift by 8k

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
As said before 4.09 would be perfect for quarter mile if your calcs are correct you said 149 in 4th which would be the preferred gear to cross the line being 1:1 ,and if you can hit 140 plus across the line it should net you a very low 10 or a high 9 depending on the 60ft time

But that is a good call I was looking at the 160 mph in 5th thinking that will be better, but if I can cross the line in 4th saves a gear change

I've been hunting around and also found what I think are the last Dyno plots on the gt42 turbo
both engine Dyno plots, I think engine spec is actually better now but a slightly smaller but more efficient turbo
Pump fuel
Race fuel
I am hoping it will make somewhere in between those 2 plots on v power

Then climbing on to over 700hp still at 8000.
That’s a wide spread!
Even on the race fuel full boost at 5000 rpm on a turbo as big as a gt42 is brilliant I think!
Cheers Paul
