Hello.

Mk2 2.8 V6 granada 1982.

Has been fine, started a few days ago and started fine, then starter motor engaged and stayed engaged whilst the engine was running, turned off and removed key and engine stopped then restarted a few seconds later with starter continually running (key fully removed). I have disconnected the battery to stop it. There are 2 wires connected to the positive terminal, a thick red one which I assume is for the spark and a thinner black one which seems to operate the lights etc... Including the starter motor. I have eliminated the ignition barrel by disconnecting the wiring; the the engine starts and runs normally once the thinner black wire is a disconnect from the battery.

Any ideas?

Hi and welcome.I would be trying an ignition switch first.It might be badly worn.

 

Thanks Glen, I disconnected the ignition switch from the loom and it still starts by itself :-( if the switch was worn, fully disconnecting it would stop power getting to the starter right? I am only a novice mechanic so please tell me if I am wrong

ignition relay could be crossing itself

 

Thanks for the help. Would the ignition relay be in the main fuse box under the bonnet? Anyway I can test the relays operation? Thanks

 

im not sure mate where its situated with ford it could be anywhere but if you do find it open it up and have a look inside to see if it f^&ked

it will get veryhot if it stays on ,so best find it


ps ,thats if it is the problem


might be worth changing the starter /solenoid aswell

 

Just had a look at the fuse box and I assume the ignition relay is marked with a lightning bolt in a triangle. I swapped the relay for the horn relay as they are the same and it still starts by itself :-(

 

have alook under your dash and see where the wires go to ,the relay could be under the dash somewhere

 

No, the heavy duty wire will connect to the solenoid, there will also be another wire going to this, this is the switched feed to the starter, I don't think there will be a relay.

The other wire from the battery will feed the whole electrical system, assuming it's OE.

If it were me I would disconnect the said wire from the starter (thinner one) disconnect battery before doing so, if it still starts then you have a problem with the solenoid.
