Default 3 door Cosworth acceleration problem

Hi,
I am having a problem with my stage one 3 door Cossie. When I accelerate the car dies in mid revs and backfires with black smoke. It's not too bad when I don't accelerate too hard.

I have fitted new plugs and ones which were running well in a mates car but the problem is still the same.

After driving, the plugs look sooty instead of straw brown....

Any ideas??

CheeRS,
Dave

It's running rich by those symptoms.

It could many things really, whose "chip" do you have?

Check the signal hose to the MAP sensor is not only securely connected, but not split!

Checked hose to map sensor, looks good and secure with no splits.

Someone had mentioned a phase sensor before, could that be the problem? It seems to die so quickly that my head nearly hits the steering wheel!
Not sure whose chipit is though...

I was going to mention that after your response to the last question... yes it's worth a look, one of the common things is the wires inside the cap disintegrate and short out, which could be the cause or the sensor itself, as I say there are plenty of other things that can cause this, these are just two examples, but you need to start somewhere.

Someone will probably mention the CTS, but I don't think this is the cause by what you describe.

Thanks Martin,

The car has done only 100 miles in two years and it's really annoying.

I appreciate the help

Will have a look in the dizzy tomorrow and also see what chip is installed...

Thanks again

Dave

Could be .... will check all joints tomorrow after work.

This might sound stupid but the coil is sitting loosely in a chrome sleeve. I thought the coil should be earthed. If it should be, this could be a potential solution??? Or am I being stupid....

Cheers James,
Just when you sort a problem another arrives....If you know what I mean..

Was trying to see what boost it was running but nearly ended up in a hedge.

Think I'll be busy tomorrow night!!

Meant to say the S1 looked great in Mullingar, did you win any prizes?

No, the coil's ground is via the ECU (Green wire), or if you are into classic cars, it's the contact breaker points.

Not sure myself. Will fix it and see if it makes any difference anyway.
