What the score with a car that has a total lost on the HPI?

My mate is looking a car and the HPI shows a total lost over 15 years ago.
Does what does that mean ? worst cast scenerio??

I guess it depends on the quality of work that was carried out to repair it. Is there any documentation to support it??

Mine is registered as a 'Total loss'. This happened when it was 3 Months old (July 1989) and was rebuilt using a Brand New genuine Ford Shell and Panels for which I have all the receipts. The family run garage that carried out the repair then owned the car until I bought it 6 years ago. Hence why I was not particularly worried.

The car is on hpi as a total loss in may 1988. Its a '87 D so it was just a year old.. HPI could not tell me if it was stolen then recovered after the insurance paid out on it or if it was damaged..thats all they have on there computer.

what catorgery (sp?) it is, cat D is the lightest form, cat C is a bit more involved & if it was cat B it would now be a pack of nails

yes .. if its been paid out on already then dont expect any nice payout if anything happens ..

i was looking at a really pukka 4x4 black saff .. came back on the register as total loss .. had everything repaird from new again .. new shell etc at fords .. contacted my insurance company and was told that if its worth 6k .. i can expect about 3k possibly less back on it if its stolen etc

So if the car is straight and if its cheap in the first place... its not that bad to buy?

No can be a good buy if purchased cheap, insurance wont pay out much, but should be around what you payed for it if you got it at the correct price.

Keep in mind that if say it was stolen and recovered and the owner refused to have it back, the insurance company may have paid him out and so the car is a total loss, not often but does happen.

As said if it is a cat d then light damage or s/r a cat C would heavier damage and then B should be scrapped as it would have been heavy damage.

How would you find out what cat it was? would/should HPI know??

I know of someone who bought a total loss but repaired car , he knew it was on the hit list but bought it anyway

2 years later he has a crash totaling the car and when the assessor came to his house to collect the documents , keys etc he found the HPI cert passed this on to the insurance company who then told this guy to whistle for any money he thought he was owed

When he contacted them to ask about this the reply he got was " He knowingly bought a previously total loss car he could not claim again the car was a total loss "

He tried to say he didnt know it was registered , but they had the HPI report in his name in front of them and even gave him his credit card details he used to pay for it


TBH I never understand people who buy cars that are on the register as they are so much fookin hassle when its time to sell again

HPI doesn't matter a toss

I bought a 2 month old T plate Vectra for £1600 (guy had bought car brand new for £16,350 2 months before ) about 6 years ago - car had been rolled into a field 3rd party , guy was drunk apparently. No finance on the car (bear in mind this was before they classified salvage into categories....)
I put a roof skin, 4 doors, a tailgate, 2 wings and front panel onto this car . New windscreen, dash out etc...big job....!!
Car was spot on after it was done and I sold it on.....but this car was HPi clear and had been practically rebuilt.....

So don't go by HPI reports - go on the condition of the car

My 1st rs turbo was a cat d total loss!!
Cat d is classed as "Beyond economical repair" so it,s not even forced to have been in a accident
When i looked into my Rst it turned out the the interior,exhaust and wheels had been stolen when it was a year old and they wrote it off because of that

When you do hpi Paul it should say the catagory it is also more information like if its real bad shell should be crushed, the thing is the catagory covers allsorts, 2 cars could be cat d one could be smashed the other stolen recovered. So lets say a Rs Turbo valued at £2000, but insurance value it at £1500 and its stolen recovered.

1st there will be garage storage fees
Then lock set possible door repair and paint or a window
then labour

fees can be up to £20 or more a day till the repair is started
lockset £300 if you can get one

labour £37per hour(thats what our garage charges)

so rough estimate based on where i work car stood for 7 days £140
lock set £300
paint and materials £150
labour £592

total £1332 plus vat


so for locks and door repair the car is a total loss and comes up on the hpi list.
