Default Putting a value on cars you sell..?

ok, ive been browsing auto trader, piston heads and ebay etc for a while now as i keep thinking about selling my puma to buy a pickup truck.

but some of the ads you see are a fucking joke! where do these people get their prices from?

mine is on a 52 plate with just under 62k miles, i got it on 54k in feb last year, ok its not the mintest one about but imo its not too bad. there are a few things that would make it better but i cant justify spending any cash on it as i wont see it back.

for instance there is one on ebay with 80k miles, but its a 1 owner for 2k...

trade in value is something like £700 and i paid a lot more for it than that, so would need to sell privatly, but are things selling at the mo?

and if i did put it up, would it be a good idea to mention it has a brake upgrade of mondeo callipers and ST170 discs, or would that put people off?

ideally for less hastle id just trade it in, but as said, id get fuck all for it...

ps this really isnt a for sale ad as im not in the position at the mo to get a truck!

just asking for people opinions!

I think people , just guess what stuffs worth and think they will get lucky with a buyer, then wonder why it's still for sale a year later.

Tho I've done it before, thinking about putting my car up for sale and put it up well over market value, and guess what..... Not one call

There doesnt seem to be any sense or logic to the pricing of 2nd hand cars at the moment.

Im looking at buying either a non molested 2wd saff, a e65/66 760swb bmw or a focus st2/3 (in white or black) but prices can vary by as much as 5 or 6 grand for similar mileage/age/history etc.

We used to guage the value of a car buy seeing what people were paying for them on ebay auctions but even that makes no sense now! for example a black st2 was recently bid up to and sold for £5,700 on ebay but a pretty much identical car a couple of days later was bid up to £7,400. Both cars were privately listed and within 100 miles of each other?.

I dont see any way of advertising something for the right money first time round, i guess you'l know its right when it sells

Saying all that means i do know one thing for certain tho.... I wouldnt want to be in the motor trade right now.

It depends, cars are selling but just not as many buyers as before.

I find most people cannot shift the car they have so offer a PX.

I try not to bother with PX as you never know what your buying into so tend to go for straight cash. You just have to hold fire to your price. People will pay it once they have looked at the other tat for sale. If it is priced right then keep that price held, try never to be in a position where you have to sell as this will mean getting hardup and needing to sell cheap.

I had this when pricing mine... Everyone one I spoke to said 20k so I stuck it up on that with the intention to be haggled down... The car will go for no less than 18k tho as I'd let it rot first... Saying that tho it's done 26yeara without any rot so far so might out live me lol.

I am also finding it difficult to find cars at a decent price. Seems to be a big black hole at between £2500 and £5000 - you either get low mileage old stuff or high mileage newer stuff. Looking for an ST220 and I am finding it difficult rationalising the premium over a normal mk3.

A 2.0 MK3 seems to be 2- 3k cheaper than the same mileage ST220

What I found, when looking to make a purchase around 3 months ago was people still thought we was in the good times when it come to selling cars. Cars I looked at then which had been for sale for months are still for sale now. They are not at the money I offered them months ago and no one is interested still. If you have a run of the mill car that are ten to a penny then you will struggle as one of the owners will do a deal. Something like a Escos etc will be harder as most who own are not in a hurry to sell

Its a buyers market, nothing has really changed in terms of if you want a car to sell then you've got to price it accordingly.

As said its all about the right person at the right time. I decided last Saturday to sell my Astra van,I didn't really want to sell but it was just getting in the way so I put a very basic half hearted ad on gum tree with no picture at a cheeky price (half hoping it wouldn't sell). Sold the van on Wednesday for 50 quid under the cheeky asking price.
On the flip side,I've been trying to sell the wife's fiesta for 4 months at a very good price and just can't budge it! It's just the luck of the draw really

I got an infraction the other month for a 'what's it worth' thread, not the same as this but pretty much in the same vein, thread got removed etc. As I was told, it didn't matter that I'd put it wasn't intended as a for sale ad, apparently 'they all say that', so I'll be interested to see what happens here!
Nothing against the op, but rules are rules, if its good for one, its good for everyone.

I actually agree with this.
There's a red one over on retrorides,y plate, less miles than yours and looks mint,no rust etc for £900,a really nice well cared for example (as yours sounds) so they are struggling.
Which is a shame as their a really nice motor, never understood why people put the engine in a fiesta zs,the pumas a nicer car all round.
£700 is about right on a trade in but saying that look at the £3500 truck as £2800-3000 and there's your difference paid.
It's swings and roundabouts.
I've been buying and selling on and off for years and although I've dropped right off the radar in the last 3 years the rules are still the same,if it's a small car with powersteering, cheap to insure and run it will sell,vw/pug diesel, sell, old ford (pre tdci broken pump nonsense)sell, clean vans with MOT,sellers, anything small auto with powersteering??sell before you advertise it usually through word of mouth etc.
And of course nowadays anything with an rs badge cheap!!!
£1500 for the puma would be a real longshot, but one idea is to take a moped/scooter in p/x.
Often young whippersnapper's hit 18,get a girlfriend, need somewhere to take her ie your puma, and get starry eyed when you take them for a "waaaaaapp, pop, waaaaaapppppp, pop, waaaaap" type blast in it and ignore the true value of their 125 scooter, end up offering you it along with a wonga loan their nan just got conned into for it.
Scooters sell all day long, you may have to sit on it til march etc but it will go very easily.
Just my thoughts.

I went to have a look at a transporter the other day advertised for £10.5k, i walked away as its interior was a bit ropey, he txt me the next day to say he would take £9250, i replied back saying £8500 and still waiting for his reply. Im pleased i only travelled 25 miles to view it as i would have been disappointed, i think if your in the wrong location its a bit of a nightmare. petrol, diesel aint cheap anymore and a day out looking at cars can easily reach a couple of hunred quid. Ive just sold my evo and the first viewer bought it, he done a 540 mile round trip to buy it. imo its worth paying a little extra for a car in better condition, low milage as resale is very important.

to be honest mate im trade and sell a lot of cars (4 puma's this year alone) few more last year and i would see your car regardless of spec at £700 trade £1150-£1200 retail tops, ive not known a puma make 2k for a long long time, ive even seen a racing puma change hands for just under 3k recentley so imo you have no chance of more than £1200

This is something i can't get my head around.

I took a 52 plate ST170 in which owes me around £1400. It is 95% mint apart from the usual light stonechips on the bonnet here and there. Just had major service and cambelt kit, waterpump etc, taxed, motd , service history, Its the top spec 3 door model with xenons, full leather recaros. On ebay the same go for around 2k... So i listed it starting at 1400.. and nothing.. one offer of ' a grand cash now innit mate ' and nothing else. I hoped to have made a bit of profit on it but not one glimmer of hope. Then saw a ropey 54 plate basic spec St170 sell for £1600 a few days later. It seems people dont appreciate a good example its all about getting the car you want for the minimal amount of cash yet when they come to view it theyre upset if its not showroom condition!

I was looking at GT TDi's and most from around 2001 - 2004 plate are sitting on 150k + miles. I know the engines are good but the body, suspension components etc must be tired by now.

not snapped, but probably crank pulley slipped so probably bent valves etc. i was happy for a quick sale at £300

and yes, i think you were mugged for £1700 if both arches are gone and it needed tyres

it didnt need new tyres, but i stuck a set of yoko prada spec 2's on, i still have the pirelli p6000's, they are currently weighing down the tarpaulin on the roof lol
