Internet Explorer, firefox, and broadband speeds???
Hi all
My broadband is getting desperatly slow. Its even impossible to use you tube now.
Please excuse if im not using the correct terms, im not that clued up on the lingo.
Im only on 0.2 bites max download speed thats slower than dial up
Thinking of getting BT out to check the lines as its fucking rediculous. BUt they want £80 call out, so trying everything else first before I call them.
Im not on vista yet still xp. and am running Interner Explorer, which a lot of people are saying is crap these days.
The pc is clean and its not needing a defragg, its up to speed as it should be, just the internet which is stupid.
A lot of people are recomending mozilla fire fox, does anyone know if this would increase my speeds, as its getting to the point where I cant use the internet at all???

In terms of dealing with BT they will only do something if you can prove that the speed you were recieving previously was greater than you are currently recieving. If it has always been slow they won't determine there to be a fault.
They can do all sorts, remotely, to determine if there is a fault on the line so ensure they have examined that route prior to sending an engineer, as in my experience an engineer very rarely resolves an issue.
Also remember that BT Broadband and BT Telephony are 2 seperate companies so it can be abit of a pain pinning a fault on a certain 'division'.
Up until you can prove something is actually wrong with the line, you can only try simple things like powering off the router for 5 minutes then turning it back on afterwards, then booting up your computer.
Deleting temp internet files etc can also help.
Easiest thing to do would be try Firefox as mentioned above, but it's unlikely to fully resolve your issue.

I use Firefox as well but it shouldn't make that much difference.
Go to www.speedtest.net and see what figures you get.
If you haven't already I would then reboot your modem (turn it off and leave it 5 mins or so and then back on (although 30 seconds is enough for mine) and try again. You may see an improvement as mine sometimes looses it's speed and need a reset.
You may also try reinstalling the drivers for the modem.
Otherwise you may have to get BT in.

Thanks everyone
Ive have fast broadband like 5bites for a few years.
Its only the last month or so its gone to 0.2
Tried most of the above, like rebooting, repowering static build up on modem/router thingy, I delete browsing history at least once a week in a vain attempt to get better speed but Nothing seems to have made a difference.
Im with BT Business, and pay £85 per 1/4. So Im a bit pissed that they wont help with out a call out charge.
As rick says, they just seem to pass the buck between the 2 "Bt" companies. niether os which are legally alowd to exchance information (fucking joke!!!)
Have just downloaded the fire fox 3.5 and will see if theres a difference.
I have a techy guy who sort my pc out usually, but Im just trying to do a few things my self first before calling him in.
Again as rick says Im most likley gona pay a bt engineer £80 for sod all. The lady on the phone said all they have to do is improve my connecting buy 0.5. only les than 0,5 can I reclaim the call out charge
Even considering buying a new PC and "starting fresh" but dont really want to do this.

FYI Lee, I had a fault on my line which BT said was my problem, i.e. within my property.
I had the BT engineer rewire the line then debated with BT in regards to the £105 they wanted to charge me or whatever figure it was.
In actual fact it is the second time I have contested a charge levied by BT and the second time I have had the fee waived, so in the worst case scenario always remember to contest the charge.

I've been using chrome for a couple months, and its gone down hill since. It was real good at first, super fast etc but now its a kind of pain that I have got used to it now, the "Incognito" mode get me interested but I use firefox for "that type of browsing" now anyway as these embedded players dnt always load on Chrome.
Might be back to firefox for me, its a really good browser.

Right just on fire fox now
done a speed test, guess what
using FOX im getting
PING 130 ms
DOWN 0.13mbps
UP 0.11mbps
Thats the browser theory out the window as some suggested.
Ive just been on the phone, cancelled my Bt business, as I cant pay£85 per 1/4 any more for sod all service.
Changing to BT phone and broadband, they are sending a home hub, so will see if this is going to make a difference over ths old linksys router thingy.
Still tempted to get Bt out. We live about 1 mile out from our village, we are the only house up here. the phone line goes direct from the exchange to our house and ends here. So dont know if this will make it harder to get it sorted as maybe im "less priority"?
No doubt one of the tractors has ploughtd up the cable or water is getting in of one of the fields into a service man hole. I think this may be my problem!

PassionFord Post Whore!!
The one thing you're missing is that BT is ADSL, so the further away from the exchange you are,the less speed you will get.
So how far from the exchange are you?
Also,if you have poor telephone wiring inside the house that could be the problem, try looking at the master socket for the telephone, there should be 2 little screws that can be removed from the faceplate, undo these and under the cover there should be another socket, the master socket, plug you're router in this then try the speedtest again, if it's better then it's your telephone wiring in the house,if it's the same then the problem lies with BT.

How are you browsing the internet!? xD
probably able to squeeze a little more here and there and mine is a decent connection (until all 6 computers / laptops in the household connect and can slow down a bit ).
After 5+ years of BT, I can conclude their lines can be very slow and error bound.
Edit: Off that speedtest website, this is a world spread of speeds.

fingers crossed it is the house, at least then I can fix it with out bt call out.
As stated i used to always get about 5, its only the last month its got bad
were about 1.3 miles to exchange. Nearesr neighbour is 1/2 mile away and we are the only house the phone line goes to up here.
Swapping to the the bt combined residential im going down to £45 per 1/4 for both.
I cant see the point in paying business prices for sod all service.
Well thats generally crap also, but still 3times better than im getting
Ps Fire fox is definatly faster on the 'back' button so cant wait to see how it stands up to Internet Explored once I can get my download speed back to where it should be

They want £80 per 1/4 plus £10 for a broadband phone, so similar to what im paying. But I have to have a poxy mast put up on the house to reciece the signal as we not near one of their hoasts.
Ignore the car, was adjusting the turbo, only shot I have of chimney
He wanted to put a great big grey surfboard shaped thing on top of the chimney
But they offer a MIMIMUM of 8mb and upwards
After being on 0.13 I dont think I could cope with the speed Bt will do for now.
Ill move the pc tommrow and have a check, hope fully ill find the fault.
ps: shouldnt you be doing burnouts

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
Glad to see someone else swearing at the internet!
I'm having issues at home too. Tried AOL, BT, etc and everything is fine with the line. I'm connecting to the net (did it whilst on the phone to AOL).
Trouble is that even though I boot up the computer, I've still to disconnect the router, wait 45/50 secs, then plug it back on again TWICE before it will actually show the net (although it says it's connected & AOL says that too).
Damn Netgear. My bro (IT techy) is away for a month too, which is a pain in the hoop!

Virgin Media is the only way forward if you can get it
On thier 20 meg line you get 2 megabytes per second download speed
MInes showing 1.4 meg a second because I'm doing a virus check

I cut the line out side on the house wall and fitted a box and plugged the pc in, guess what still 0.13
So looks like its BT's problem as ive eliminated everything else my end!
Getting hold of some one and actually speaking to them at BT is another thing tho
2 is not that fast?
The other line here also on bt is doing 3.75. and were out in the sticks
