I have downloaded it for my PC and Laptop and set it up so i can now watch from downstairs EVERY thing that Josh does on the desktop in the office upstairs and CONTROL Is PC

NOow that is the bollox

www.vnc.com the only thing i had to do was

1. Know the IP addys of the 2 machines wooooo hooo

2. Allow it access through the firewall

Now that is clever bit of kit and FREEEEEE

We use VNC at my work to connect to 100's of machines of our network, think that we might well have the licences for it though!!!

Good piece of software when it doesnt play up and as long as you dont try to install it on a 95 machine

who knows if you can connect cross platform to a unix station through windows using it rather than using a graphical terminal emulator like Reflection X ?

assuming both machines reside on the same hub.

It works cross platform, but on some linux distros you need to start a x session after connecting to the vnc server

does vnc support X sessions, or do you still need the emulator?

ah, excellent. could come in very usefull, saves buying licences for reflection x anyway.

off the top of you rhead... can it force a static (predetirmined) IP address to a Xwindow regardless of the machine IP address?

I use it for my server in the kitchen, haven't got a monitor for it so its great to control from the other computer.

I also use it on my parents computer so I can help them out whenever they need some support. Perhaps not the safest way but it only runs when they need help and the firewall is shut otherwise as well plus its set to accept only my IP. So for the short periods I use I doubt would cause any harm.

dave, i think youre missing the whole point of Xwindows... lol whilst its handy to just get a screen up of another machine, the functionality of just running X proggys on a windows based Xserver (like for example Xwin32) beats it hands down if youre doing proper cross planform *nix stuff...

so its not as good as reflection X say for example for running unix "terminals" on windows machines connecting to a unix host?

the problem we have is that our network dynamically assigns IP address on the fly, where the unix server needs the IP address to remain static to recocnise it as a terminal through Xwindows.

The unix box just needs to do a reverse lookup of the client IP, configure your dns server to add a reverse lookup zone for your network and it'll work fine using host name resolution

trouble is the application we are running under unix only allows IP addresses, not DNS. we are due to upgrade the OS any time soon, cant remember what version of unix we are wunning at the moment, but does the lastest version allow DNS lookup?

I thought all used dns and reverse lookups, name resolution will fail though if you dont have a reverse lookup zone

but this would need a list of every address that the hosts could ever be, our lan dynamically assigns ip addresses which expire after each logon, so the wya we get round it is to have the network reserve the ip address of the machine we need it on when it sees the mac address of the network card sigh o the system, these reserved addresses are soley for the machines we use reflectionx on .

if we could run reflectionx on any pc with any ipaddress and the unix servers still see them as terminals we'd be laughing, there must be more than one way of skinning a cat as they say.

not web hosted no and not needing to sit on a DMZ either, just the SSL box will make a connection to the UNIX box and 'webify' it so that you can see it within a browser where ever you may be ie corporate laptop internally, externally, or a PDA over GPRS or even a webcafe etc!
