Default launching, installing dos based software

it is to go on an old 200 mhz laptop with win 98

i loaded the lapy the normall way and plonked in the cd and manually dragged all filles to my desktop and they do open with dos but normal widows is operating in background

im having troubles getting the software and hardware to work properly

i think its supposed to be in dos purely ie i restart pooter in dos mde and load software etc

how do i do that?

can i install the software in restart dos mode?

ie i feel i wan to wipe everything start fresh and install it all properly

yes do that, copy all the files from your CD to your HDD and then boot the PC up in MS DOS MODE (or shutdwon... restart in MS-DOS Mode) and then run the file manually

WIN 98 also allows you to.....

You can also copy all the software to the pc, create a shortcut on the desktop to start it.
Then right click the shortcut and edit the properties and set the background
mode to suspend mode and full screen and it usually runs as if only DOS is running.
Hope that makes sense.

ok the prompt tells yuo what drive and directory youre in:

so C:\> means your on the C Drive n the root directory (ie not in anything)

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP> means you're in the windows/temp folder/directory

DIR gives you a list of all the files where you are at the moment. 9the folers have <DIR> next to them (ignore the ones with one and wo fullstops)

to move to a directory you typ CD befoore it (so to move to windows director you type CD WINDOWS

if you type CD .. it brings you back a step

when you run the DIR command look for files eith BAT COM or EXE next to them... these are the programs you can run...

so say your sofatware is in the MAPPING folder...

c:\> CD MAPPING
c:\MAPPING> DIR

then itll list all the programs look for the program ones (probably EXE) so says its called startmap.exe

c:\MAPPING> STARTMAP

program should now run (in theory)

its a tilde

~

normally to the left of the one or next to enter depending on keyboard...

its becasue DOS only understands 8 character filenames and windows does 200+

so if youve got a file called "biglongfilenamethatsdosdontunderstand.txt" when you view it in dos it truncated it to an 8 digit name calling it BIGLON~1.txt
