The unix box just needs to do a reverse lookup of the client IP, configure your dns server to add a reverse lookup zone for your network and it'll work fine using host name resolution
trouble is the application we are running under unix only allows IP addresses, not DNS. we are due to upgrade the OS any time soon, cant remember what version of unix we are wunning at the moment, but does the lastest version allow DNS lookup?
