You're 100% right Steve.

Surcharge Policies
eBay has adopted the following surcharging policy in the interests of ensuring that all buyers receive clear and accurate pricing information when trading on eBay.co.uk. This surcharge policy applies only to items listed on eBay.co.uk.

eBay prohibits surcharging by sellers except where described below. Surcharging occurs when sellers pass the charges they incur for using eBay or third party services such as payment services onto buyers.

Specific examples are explained below for your guidance:

1. Electronic Money Services: Sellers who accept electronic money services as a means of payment for an item purchased on eBay, may not impose a surcharge.

Electronic money services include, but are not limited to, services such as PayPal, Nochex, FastPay or Moneybookers.

2. Cheques and Money Order: Sellers may not charge buyers an additional fee for their use of ordinary forms of payment, including acceptance of cheques and money orders.

3. eBay Fees: Sellers may not pass onto buyers any eBay selling fees including but not limited to listing fees, listing enhancement fees and final value fees.

In my oppinion if you allow people to pay via Paypal this means they can use a credit card and may pay more than they would if they had to pay cash! 4% is fook all if your item makes twice the price it may have done if Paypal wasn't an option!!

My mate has had several items on lately with "please add 4%.." etc, and quickly received emails from Ebay asking could he remove it, as they had received complaints. So even if they dont spot it themselves others out there are "reporting" sellers who still adopt this policy.

bear in mind people....paypal costs its owners money...it doesnt just pop up free of charge as a gift from god, it needs hosting, it has bank fees/charges of its own for the transfer of money between it and its customers bank accounts...someone set that site up to make a profit, like the people at ebay, like a lot of websites...I mean I dont know many types of website except forums etc which aren't out to make some money...if you dont wana pay 4% then carry on mailing ur 150 pound coins n paying 12quid postage for the pleasure =)

I think it's unfair for people to ask that the Paypal surcharge is met by buyers

If you accpet Paypal, it must mean you're willing to receive the money faster? Well at least making sure the buyer is genuine, not so much faster because it isn't

I won't bid on ANY auctions that want the Paypal surcharge met

its not a surcharge its commission for the sale of cash transfer , why should i as a seller have to pay it ? i pay it as a buyer , so either way its all good !!

as a seller i will always give the option of paying by paypal and charge the 4% , i also give other options as well such as cheque for those who wont pay the charge. Why should i pay for a charge for recieving money, paypal is run by ebay and ebay charge a lot of money anyway so give the crap that they have to pay to run it cause its all the same company!!

I also love the people who email you saying 'what you are doing is against ebay rules'.....................care

also , the 4% amounts to quite a bit when you are accepting Ł1000's plus the selling fees , then you got the people who dispute the postage as well the little

rant over

sorry but aint it the same as a shop charging ya for the itema dn then chargin ya more for the shop rates ect

think its one of them things sellers should agree to pay, ya dont go to a auction and then pay the fees for the buyer do ya

and again i wouldnt accept 1000 quid from a nigerian cheque, id rather pay 40 quid and accept paypal

and lets be honest too people, ebay at the moment is a sellers market, not a buyers market

think when ya selling ya old shit ya was gonna lob in the bin anyway if it wasnt for ebay then 4% aint alot

Shops get charged 2.5% on credit card transactions and about 50p on switch card transactions. Do they charge you the extra 2.5% or 50p to make up for it? - no, so to me, why should i as a buyer pay the 4% or whatever, and also what right do i have as the seller to charge it.

If i signed up to paypal (which i arent) i am agreeing to their terms, and if that means that I get charged the 4% per transaction, then i've agreed to it as part of the service.

Also, cant paypal take the money from your account again if theres something wrong with the credit card (ie stolen / copied) or if the buyer says theres something wrong with the item / never received?

I signed up to paypal when you could legally charge for it, I understand the shop scenario BUT................. am i a shop??

I am a private seller and if i sell something for Ł500 then i want Ł500 not Ł500 -4%, i very rarely use paypal now because of all the arguments that are caused by it , but look how many are still charging to use it id say its over 25% of auctions

SapphyMike,

i think you will find that all the small business that get charged for the use of credit cards DO actually pass it on to the customer , a company i used to work for always charge extra to cover the costs of YOUR conveniance , why should the retailer pay because you cant/wont pay by cash ?

some shops DO charge you more if you pay by credit card, i do a small amount on ebay but dont accept paypal, i begrudge paying their rippoff percentage, by using my own terminal i saved 4K on this financial year alone. also paypal is not 100% secure, i have heard loads of stories where people have had money taken back from their account because the punters credit card was found to be dodgy.
cheers nomad ps pretty sure that paypal is owned by ebay
pps if i state i am using my own pdq terminal then i am entitled (under ebay rules) to add a percentage to the final price if i so chose, i dont do this because its cheaper for me not to use paypal in the first place.

So, what is to happen if you buy something off someone who is requesting the extra 4% to cover paypal charges, and you refuse to pay it, as it is against the rules?

Surely there will be some sort of stalemate until you pay the 4% they are requesting, becuase they wont send the item until they receive the extra 4%, regardless of ebay telling them it's against the rules.

I suppose I want my cake, and I want to be able to eat it, because I dont wanna pay the 4% as a seller, and I dont want to pay the 4% as a buyer!!! lol

jimmyboy all sellers know by now that they are not allowed to add the percentage, i think you will find that if you dont pay it then theres not a lot the sellers can do about it. cheers nomad
