Default To buy or not to buy!

Hey gang,

Am considering trading in my ST220 for a series 2 Escort rs turbo.
I use the car as an everday car (6000 miles a year) and am not one for making adjustments or restoring. Have about £5k to spend, my question really is "is this a wise idea?"

Any thoughts appreciated!

I'm that case no, I've brought a s2 that's in great condition but even on the first day of driving after it being stood so long I'd developed a fuel leak, oil leak. Had wrong fueling ecu, wrong plugs etc. These sort of cars require attention to keep them in good form. If u just leave things and don't fix them the car will be fucked in a short period of time.

After a whole day of pissing around it runs great but need to find a new fuel tank

My advice is keep the Mondy if its intended for an everyday car

I would tend to agree here! Could you not save up for a nice example and then insure it on a classic policy for peanuts?

If you're after a brand new tank mate, I can point you in the right direction when I get on my computer

As an everyday car that you don't want to have to maintain as you need to with older cars that are used daily, I'd keep the Mondeo. Creature comforts make a BIG difference. If you do decide to take the plunge take no notice of everyone who says that RS's are unreliable and all that - if you buy the wrong one and abuse it then they can go wrong (as ANY car would) but if you spend decent money, buy a decent car, look after it properly and don't abuse it they're absolutely fine.

Is 5k enough for a decent example?
I look after my cars but don't have the know how to make repairs myself so always pay for garages. Ive always wanted an rs escort and am finding the Mondeo a bit "too nice", want some old Skool drivers action!

5k is plenty mate, i'm selling mine now for 2.8k and that's a very good clean example. have used this one as a daily (except for the winter) as for repairs, they are fairly reliable cars as long as you keep on top of servcies. in my time of owning she has never let me down once!

cheers

£5k should get you a decent S2 mate, but be prepared to spend all of that to get something of the calibre you're looking for. That amount will get you a very nice S2. However if it's a S1 you want, anything half decent starts at £5k and I would not recommend one as an everyday driver.

Depends on the car mate, don't be put off by either. Condition is paramount to absolutely everything - make sure you know what you're doing, what you're looking for and stick to your guns.

Great advice thanks bud. My st220 is top nick which i spent along time looking for so I'm beginning to get cold feet that I may end up with a shed and rue the day I made the change!

I wouldn't recommend one as an every day driver im afraid, great fun occasionally, if you really want an rs turbo I would highly recommend a good fiesta turbo, or an escort thats been converted to efi.

Happy hunting

I still disagree there old cars now and even a cracking example used everyday will have issues im sorry, i love mine and think there not bad at all but id hate to run one as a daily as parts are harder to find nowadays and such. Great cars but for everyday use id stick with the mondy as it will be far better IMO. I still think there will be required regaular maintenance and if its not something he wants to do the advice of keeping the other car surely makes more sense ? Just my 2p's worth

Some sound advice again. I'm leaning to sticking with the mondy. It's a very tidy car and I've only had a year. I've always wanted an rs escort so am leading with my heart. Not practicable to have 2 cars unfortunately.
Are xr3i's any better lol!

Well im running my van and a s2 now. Its took me a while to get where i am but my advice is to save a little every week if you can and if it takes you a while it wont matter. A 5500 quid RS turbo will be too good to use as an every day car and will end up spoilt in out climate.

If you buy the 3i you will allways wish you'd gone the extra mile and had your dream car.

Keep saving mate, im 29 and Need to Insure got my quote down to 236 for a year!!! Now things like that make it more affordable. Wont be used all the time just when im feeling fruity

Keep the Mondy, save as much as you can then you will have the best of both worlds IMO its worked for me and im as happy as a pig in shit dude, allthough ive allready found maintenace issues and have only covered 60 miles lol

That sounds wicked mate, tbh I haven't anywhere to keep an additional car. It sounds like the dream (for me) is over. It HAS to be used as an everyday all weather car, though only about a hundred miles a week. I have seen some that have had loads of preventative work done and hoped this might be some sort of solution but from common opinion here it seems not.

i have to disagree with this lol

theres afew guys on rsoc who use theres daily and love them,
your going to have problems with any car you buy at the end of the day imo key is to buy a standard one that has been well looked after and you should be ok. mine has done 115k and i have receipts for everything that has ever been done to it the biggest thing was 5th gear everything else is silly little wear and tear bits really.

thats my car phill posted a link to and yes its not really a car to use daily well i wouldnt just because of how clean it is.

I guess you have to weigh things up to be honest, i used to run mine as an everyday car but fuel was like 90p a litre lol.

I feel bad now, dont wanna put you off your dream just dont want you to regret it.....lol who am i to ruin your dreams ? LOL Gav has a very valid point if im honest, if the car has been well looked after and you dont tune the shit out of it it would be reliable just not sure if it would be maintenance free but like he says no car is if were all honest.

My advice is: Have a long hard think, if its what you want do it we only live once and you dont want to regret it for the rest of your life now do ya ? With things as they are if you spend that sort of money and look after it theres no reason you wouldnt get it back in 12 months if you decide its not what you want and cant afford the running costs.

Great advice Chris. The st220 is not exactly cheap to run fuel/tax/insurance. I appreciate all cars having running costs, I just don't wanna end up with a pile of rust a year down the line because Ive used it all year round. Aghhh you guys are not making this easy lol all loving your cars but not able to recommend them for permanent use! Why can't it be 1988 again!

mine is proberbly better on fuel than my transit connect and i guess if you gave it plenty of waxoil and cleaned it once aweek theres no reason why it shouldnt last you.

my 03 bmw had rotten arches
my 02 audi S3 had corrosion coming through
and theres alot of more modern cars that are the same so old fords are not really any different its how you care for it.

as chris said if you buy one and if its a gooden if you changed your mind about it a year on you wont have lost any money if you decide to sell up good ones will hold there value

Some very good advice right here!

Buy a real tidy one, wax oil it to death and there's no reason why it couldn't be used everyday. I've seen an unrestored, standard S1 do 250k on original running gear as it was well looked after and maintained properly

i ran mine hard everyday for two years it got hammered everywhere and never once let me down, i have only took it off the road for a freshen up on the body, i would however not swop a mondeo in for one tbh as they are two worlds apart lol

As a daily i would keep the mondy. If you don't do bits yourself don't get an rst. Even if you spend 5k on one and use it as a daily it'll soon fall in value and let you down!
