I keep seeing cars come up for sale that have had a different (usually larger more powerful) engine put in them with the same words in the advert
"still a 1.2 on the log book so low insurance etc..."
Surely that is invalid insurance and it must be some sort of tax fraud as well with the road tax bracketing?
or am I missing something?

It is ilegal and if you had a smash insurance would ask for log books I think.
My van will have to be looked over at an MOT station to clarify convertion has been compleetd correctly and is road safe, the DVLA will change it to 2L petrol on log book.

what if you tell the insurance company of the change of engine and they have it listed on the policy but dont tell the DVLA - technically are you still covered by the insurance?
My saf is going to have an engine change but im not telling the DVLA, as its currently registered as a 2.0 and i will dropping a 2.0 engine back in (albeit with a turbo) - my insurance hasnt mentioned anything to me about it not being covered, in fact i can have whatever mods i want as long as i dont up the engine cc

martin at least your firenza is old!!
I wonder how long before they make it that post 2001 cars with an engine swap have to be tested on an analyser for CO2 and get put into a co2 bracket for the new engine??
could be a good earner for the government by raping those with engine conversions for £500 a year tax instead of the £215 under the old scheme tax rules.

How many people have actually been caught with undeclared mods/engine swaps ?
After looking on many forums I found one case when someone was caught and charged.
They did kill someone though...
Anybody on here know of anyone that has been caught with and undeclared engine swap ? and what happened to them ?

My dad forgot to declare points on his licence and previous accidents. He was fully comp and was at fault No one came to check nothing on his car or insurance it just went to his mate's bodyshop and garage, repair was done, insurance sent bill, that was it. Unless they send an engineer round to view the damage and he reports on any mods, no one will say anything. My car is heavily modded and my insurers know all about my mods. There may have been one or two that slipped my mind but it has so many I doubt they would even bother to verify every single mod.
I can't see why you'd want to hold off telling the DVLA the new engine number in your case, it keeps all the records straight and whether it's a 2.0 with a carb or 2.0 with a turbo, supercharger and NOS makes no odds to road tax on your car.

Based on how others have been treated. You'll get the generic response that an engine of abcd cc cannot exist and you need to prove either with purchase receipts etc etc BS BS or letterheaded paper from garage that carried out the work bla bla bla
They even sent this to Mini owners changing details to 1275cc....according to the DVLA, no engine was ever made at 1275cc.
You can see they put a lot of thought into their letters.
Solution. Print your own "garage receipt" etc and tell them exactly what they want to hear regardless of any truth.
i wouldnt worry about logbooks/tax details myself but of course you should declare mods that matter but having worked in a main dealer bodyshop i do know nobody really checks
cars comes in for pricing and a list and price is made and pics are taken and emailed as proof of damage (if required) a workshop wants business so wont rock the boat by getting shirty with a stainless exhaust and prob wouldnt even know if that engine was std and even if they suspected they wont get a copy of you cover, just a yes or no to cover so maybe its declared, its rare to not have std for modded neways so it wouldnt matter in the number either
of course a big crash and some investigation will get you in trouble fast and if the cops impound you car you may have to prove you are insured, if they copper knew his stuff maybe he coudl instist insurance covered mods before it was released??? when people collected them when i was there we used to do the old 7day wonder checks of paperwork and take some cash tho

Despite insurance being so corrupt and criminal itself, yes people are getting caught. Some police just try and hunt people down. Why is beyond me when the real criminals ( the insurance companies ) dont even get a look in.
They do checks quite a lot here for that type of thing. Stopping "boy racers" in their car parks, sitting minding their own business. They trail them to roadside MOT tests, check insurance etc. If caught they do charge with no insurance, and using fraud to obtain insurance, and if they fail the roadside MOT, more prosecutions can follow or the car be impounded depending on severity of fail.
Although seeing the state of some cars here ( they actually remove the springs to lower the car ) it's hard to argue with that aspect.
Won't ever happen.
The CO2 rating for new cars is far more complicated than just bunging it on an analyser.
