Default buying a car with no log book...?

private seller, cheap car (£1500) but they say the log book was lost, ive no idea why they couldn't apply for a new v5 before selling as im sure that would have gave them a better selling price but whats the best way around this to avoid getting stung or is it best to just avoid?

Do a hpi check on it to make sure it's not needing a vic test or if it's had a bad accident. Some people sell cars without the log book as it states on the bottom of the form if it's been crash repaired or it's been repaired but needs a vic check. You won't be able to tax it either as u need the document reference number off the log book to tax it and as I'm sure your aware u have to tax a car as soon as u buy it now. Personally I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. If it was a £200 car then I'd risk it but £1500 is a lot of money to lose

I've bought a car before with no logbook, as already said, I just did a hpi check and got the seller to write me a receipt then I just applied for the logbook which I got no problems. It was no bother at all really although theres always that thought at the back of your mind that theres something off about it. Once the logbook came through I never gave it a 2nd thought.

Can you tax it without or is it off the road for 3-4 weeks until you get the v5 ?

I taxed my car a year or so ago without the log book. There is a form you can fill in.

Not sure if the rules are the same.

if the car is in your name you can do it but if not and without it your stuck until you get the V5 plus it costs you £25 for the new V5 too, it can be done over the phone and is quicker this way

That's also covered in the hpi check, "any loan secured against the vehicle"
