Default Cossie Fuel Tank

My car (stage 3 saff.) is running lean over 4500 rpm in 4th and 5th gears

STU from MSD thinks it may be my intercooler (has a small hole) or wrong fuel tank ie. non ford item. Trying to rule out the fuel tank.

What i want to know is how do i tell if it is the right one ?

Would the worng tank cause my car to run lean?

The tank is silver. Are ford tanks not black?

Wheres the cheapest place to get a proper ford tank if i need one ?

Theres a lot of saphs fitted with pattern part tanks these days, including mine
Can't see any reason for the tank making the car run lean, because the cosworth fuel pump is just gravity fed,not as if there is a swirl pot or lift pump or anything like that in a Ford tank

Pattern tanks are available for £49 delivered to your door,Ford are in the region of £200

Not positive there is'nt m8

But thought gravity fed fuel pumps didn't need a swirl pot

Will have to wait for someone to reply that has cut open both types of tanks to see whats inside

As you said though, they list them for a Cosworth,so should be compatible

hiya mate,
the only thing inside the fuel tank on a sapphire cosworth is a float to measure how much fuel is left thats how the fuel gauge works. can't see how a non standard fuel tank will make a car run lean.

This seems strange as the rs turbo escort is gravity fed but has a swirl pot. I always thought they also had a swirl pot as i had a mk2 fes tank modified with swirl pot from which i recall the fabricater that did it said itwas 2wd swirl pot. be interested to see what others reckon.

New pump and wires.

I dont think it is the tank causing my 'lean' issue i just wanna rule it out for sure

if Stu says it may be the fuel tank then i'm afraid it may be the fuel tank, does sound more like an intercooler leaking boost but stu knows more than almost anyone on here so i'd trust his experience

I do trust stu believe me. Thats why im trying to get to the bottom of it b4 i travel down to see him again.

As stu and others on here have highlighted , it could be the tank but last on the list of possibilities. Hence, i dont wanna spend £200 + on a ford replacement if i dont have to.

As its more likely to be the intercooler ive ordered a new Pro alloy one

Still no nearer to knowing if the tank could be a problem though ?

I had an original Ford tank on my car - it looked to be in good condition and wasn't dented, but for some reason there was was an internal blockage preventing the "trap" from filling fast enough so the fuel pump was sucking air through. Replaced it with a pattern tank and problem solved.

take your tank off, open up the fuel sender thingy and have a look inside. hours job, tops (if the bolts aren't too rusty)
