Default Cosworth tappet noises?

Hey there, dunno if anyone can help me but here goes.

I have a 4x4 saph cosworth and recently its started to really tap like hell for the first 5 mins after a cold start. The noise is like a knackered cvh tbh and its really driving me up the wall. The oil levels are fine and there is no noise when the engine is started warmish.

Any ideas what i'm going to need replaced and the approx costs?

Yeah now you mention it and it seems especially bad on the frosty mornings. Is it a common thing?

it's the oil NOT being pump up into the followers due to it being abit thick due to the cold weather! just let it tick over for a couple of mins b4 u move off!

It runs great once warm and the oil i'm using is quite thick. I don't use anything like magnatec as I was advised that this is too thin for the engine not sure if that is true or not.

It sounded pretty bad today and my main concern other than the neighbours looking at me funny is that something breaks. Should I use a thinner oil during the winter, have the tappets adjusted if that is possible or just leave it?

Cheers for your help.

you CANT adjust the tappets, give it a oil change if you want or leave it as is m8 just DONT rev it till it does quiet,

you have basically three options:

1; leave it as it is and put up with it till it's warm

2; try a thinner grade oil during the winter months

3; replace all the followers.

changing the oil to try it is fairly painless, just costs you a few ŁŁ and no bad can come of it.

Replacing the followers may help but there's no guarantees, especially if it's actually the oil thickness which is causing the problem anyway. If it's OK when warm then the followers themselves are unlikely to be the root cause. There is no tappet adjustment, they are automatically "adjusted" by the oil pressure.

I got possible tappet noise in my Sierra Cosworth 4wd, it kind of started after the car stood for 3 weeks without being used. It makes very audible clacking or ticking when it's cold, for about 5 minutes. Before, it only made the noise for like 30-60 seconds and it wasn't as loud. When cold, the noise fades when giving slightly revs, but also it might be the engine noise over the ticking. The noise drastically reduces after around 5 minutes so it can't be rod bearings? Also when the car is hot it makes a bit of the same noise but it's much more silent and sounds like any other Cossie in YouTube videos. Also on hot starts, it makes the ticking sound for few seconds after it quietes down? How come the noise started after the car wasn't used for 3 weeks? I changed new oil after that, same 10W-60 Castrol Edge FST and it didn't help. The noise seems to be coming from the head.

My cold starts are around +10-25 celsius temperatures. Car has 168 000 km on the clock. One weird thing is, that the noise has never been audible in first ~5 seconds. It only starts after few seconds after starting. I'll take videos when I can, but when cold it sounds quite like the car in this video, 1:25 ->

That's 2WD?

When was the oil last changed? It may be that the lifters need replacing, given the millage and age, as you know they are hydraulic so 'pump up' with oil.

Additionally, on 2WD piston slap is a known issue from a cold start (4x4 has offset gudgeon pins, which reduces this).

I switched to 5/40 pro s in the colder months and it definately made a difference regards to followers staying quieter earlier.

It's 4wd. I will try to put some videos of the noise here so you can assess how made the noise is. I changed oil 2 days ago. Before that, last oil change was spring 2013 and I drove ~5000 km with that oil.

Oh right, I was referring to the car in the video, which now transpires is not your car?

As I say, it may be the tappets, I guess you don't know the oil pressure?

Oh yes, the car in the video is not mine, my car just makes quite similar noise. I have no oil pressure gauge in my car so I don't know it... Could a problem with oil pressure cause good condition tappets to make noise?

Okay I managed to borrow better phone to get reasonable videos. Here is a video when the engine is warm. Do you think these tappets are noisey and need to be replaced? I'll also post a warm start up vid.
