Default How to identify Dodgy tappet when out.

I have a nasty rattle from my top end, i dont think its piston slap as it never goes away when warm but at soon as i go over 2k it silent. ive took tappets out 13 of them when i squeeze them are rock solid 3 have got some spongyness to them.

one thing i did notice the cam caps have some slight scoring on them like in the past its run out of oil or picked something up.

should lifters have some movement in them when you squeeze it or should it be rock solid. i did run engine just before removing the cams.

Normally if u have just taken them out and there full of oil u shouldn't be able to squeeze them with your thumb and finger. Squeeze them in the vice to let the oil out (do it slowly back and forth) and then if there seized it'll be obvious and you won't be able to squeeze them between your thumb and finger let alone in the vice. If there silly sloppy then they need binning. Is it a Cossie? If so a while genuine ina set is only
£79 for all 16

If you have a micrometer you can measure each tappet to see if any of them are stuck partially closed, best thing to do is squeeze them all closed in a vice so the oil is out then put them all in tub of clean oil over night and make sure they've release open the same

Cossie mate.
GCFCOS i suspect i have 2 or 3 dodgy ones then. did notice the timing slightly out aswell but it might be because its under a tooth difference so cant get it bang on. i have 2 new camshafts here so ill try them and new tappets in at the same time hopefully work.

If you have 2-3 hydraulics out it will run a bit lumpy anyway, but if you have new tappets its best to use them

Yeah mine went the same, when I did my group a head gasket I changed all the tappets as they were only £79 for a full set of oe ina original ones. U say u have scoring on the cam retaining caps? May be time to strip it all out cams and all and inspect them very closely indeed
