Has anybody got any idea why my timing belt is moving like this. Non of the pulleys, crank, cams or intermediate shaft have any movement in them which made me think the tensioner, but its brand new. The belt used to do this on the car the egine came out of. Really weird. It doesnt touch any of the flanges on the tensioner or the crank pulley though. Its got me scratching my head

mine does the exact same mate and ive given up trying to find out why so ive left it and seems ok, ive changed the verniors, the aux pulley, the crank spocket, the belt and the tensioner and it still does it..

 

have you checked the toothed crank pully for wear?

 

Just worked out why it may be doing it. The camshafts are 4x4 cams and the head is a 2wd head. Think I have read somewhere that a spacer is required for this.

I have read the 4x4 shafts are 5mm longer, but i cant work out how a spacer would make them shorter??

 

Personal opinion is you have a Friday belt , ie not the best, is it a genuine Ford item ?

 

Its a Gates belt and INA bearing.

 

iirc the spacer spaces them towards the back of the head

have you got the washer fitted between the two bottom pulleys?

Crank pulley? The outer washer is in place yes pointing away from the engine.

Just spotted them Are the profiles the same on the 2wd & 4x4 cams?

 

I run 4x4 cams in my 2wd head both in and out with no probs have also had just 4x4 in and 2wd out once again no probs

the spacer sits behind the bearing moving the cam backwards

 

I have ordered the spacers from MSD, do I need different sized oil seals for the 4x4 cams in 2wd head as well? I have noticed mine are weeping. Im assuming this is because the 4x4 cams need different seal?

This car is really testing my patience.

 

are you saying you think you have a 4x4 cam in your 2wd head without the spacer fitted?

if that was the case you would have very bent valves due to the cam moving forward and locking up

but they would have locked when the cam pully was tightened if a spacer wasn't fitted

 

no the bearing carrier bearing and seal are the same far as i know if its leaking oil from that area i will more than likely be the half moon seals.

just remember if it's not leaking........ ITS EMPTY

 

I dont know mate. I bought a complete car and removed this engine to go in my restoration project. It had BD10s and machined pulleys but these were removed before I bought it and 4x4 cams were put in their place (which i didnt know). I have exhausted all other posibilities and I thought the only thing causing the belt movement could be the cams sitting out of position due to the absence of the spacer.

I also have an oil leak from the cam seals (these are 2wd seals that I fitted, as I was not aware of the cams being 4wd)

Its starting to piss me off now, Ive been at it for 10 months restoring the car and every time I get to the stage where its nearly done, something else happens. Its supposed to be going for its MOT tomorro @ 11:30 but im not taking it anyware if the cams are gonna lock up and fuck the engine.

I will have to whip the cam cover off in the morning and see whats going on. Im hoping the spacers are there, but even if they are, i have no idea if the bearings are correct and if the seals are wrong.

 

have you tensioned the tensioner the right way? not sure wich way is correct but you can turn it clock wise or anticlock wise. just a thought. soz comented before i watched the vid dont know what that could be.

The spacers as said allow the 4wd cams to be used in 2wd heads by spacing the cams back around 5.86mm more, and go between the cams machined journal that sits in the bearing and the rear face of the cam bearing, if they were needed and not fitted, when tightening the cams and them being drawn too far forwards they would as said hit the cam cap posts, your engine would be wrecked by now if that was the case.
It looks to me like the tensioner pulley is slightly oval, I'd be putting a dial gauge on it and checking to be safe.
The direction of tension cannot cause this walking motion yours has on the belt.

I had tensioned it the wrong way.... Corrected it this morning, and the belt now looks much better, it still wanders a tiny bit but nowhere near as bad. Took the cam cover off and they are 2wd cams that are fitted and not 4x4. Glad i order them spacers , so cant be that either.

Passed its MOT today thought woohoo. Emissions were bang on 2.5% so at least i know my gas analyser is acurate. Just glad to get some use out of it.
