focus 1.6 mk1 zetec se running fault! help!
i have a focus 1.6 zetec se on a 53 now this car is treated like a god! oil and filter every 3k full service every 6k but just lately its being a pig!
when im cruising it sometimes loses power like sttuttering and then the power comes back its not missfireing on idle and ive put my works scanner on the car and there are two codes stored one saying not all obd11 checks are complete and the other one says a fuel level malfunction.
theres no split air pipes and the only thing i could here was a slightly noisey air like sound from the red fuel pressure regulator return pipe.
the second fault is ive been getting a really strange smell from the middle heater vents inside the car it does come and go and the fan works perfectly on all its settings, ive yet too pressure test the coolant system but i did find today that the bootom radiator hose is slightly weeping because its a metal unit and corrosion on the hose and rad caused an imperfect seal.
any help and advise would be great!
many thanks tony!

Have you checked the rubber pipe behind the inlet manifold. The one that goes to the pcv valve?
these sometimes split or even worse get blocked with gunk.
If theres no splits, whilst your engines running check to make sure the rubber pipes not constrained.
I had one in on a 02 plate not so long ago for a service that was running like a dog.On closer inspection the pipe was actually going flat when the engine was running.
you may as-well change the pcv valve whilst your at it.I think ford say 90k+ or something but it wont hurt it.
anyway i hope this helps.

No its the positive crank vent.heres some more info on it here-http://www.focushacks.com/index.php?...be%20others%29
Bare in mind that the picture shown in that illustration isnt the se engine.
On the se the valves down in between the inlet manifold at the front of the engine.
Its got like two rubber hoses coming out from the block then the go into one at a 'T' junction and into the PCV valve.

this car is still doing this problem, its struggling to pull under load and is pinking when it looses power, replaced the ignition coil the other day and still no joy.
any ideas?
no fualt codes are stored on the ecu and it mostley miss behaves when it is hot.
thanks tony!

Its the fuel pressure regulator.
Its not pinking with higher octane because it can then run a tad leaner with no problems but this won't show up on a diag scan as the se has no fuel pressure sensor. I've had 3 se 1600 engines in a year with this problem and all have been fpr.
If you want to be 100% sure before you change the part put a pressure gauge on and drive whilst watching pressure. Will be worth you checking plugs for cracks but this normally causes a missfire not splutter

just cured similar problems on my focus 1.6 52 plate and my friends code reader said that i had some fuel level malfunction and that both my exhaust sensors were f**ked, so i replaced one and cured half probz then replaced the other and cured all problems ...
My problems were miss firing and lumpy at idle, lose of power when put my foot down (but not at high speed, 70mph) then power would cut back in, also have you checked your gaps. i cannot remeber what the codes were, sorry

Check it hasn't got bosch plugs fitted, I've always had about 50% failure rate with this make of plug on these engines, all caused by the plug tracking, you'll see streaking going up the porcelain from the area of the metal body is this is the case, it looks like lightening streaks.
Don't worry about any orange ring if there this is normal, it's corona discharge caused by oil mist in the air around the plug staining the plug.

fitted the fuel pressure regulator today not noticed any running problems yet but ive filled up with normal unleaded today and its pinking its tits off again! i cant beleive that an econemy car has to run on super just to run right? a bit pissed with this car now as ive replaced the coil now scanned no fault codes stored and its always serviced with genuine ford bits includeing the fuel filter.
going to check the cam timing this weekend and if thats fine im going to do my third waterpump on this car since ive had it due to yet anouther leaky core plug in the water pump housing and book it in for richard at tremona garage a local ford specialist to have a look at.
i love it but this is costing me a fortune on super and i could understand if it was an rs but its a boggo 1.6 shoping car just to get me to my girlfriends and to work!
