Hi guys,
I've got a 2002 Mondeo TDCI that's starting to have a few issues. I've got an OBDII scanner, but it doesn't appear to be compatible with the car, from reading up it looks like pre 2004 it didn't support OBDII. (Either that, or my cheapy OBD reader has given up the ghost)
So what standard does it use? Because the socket's there under the steering wheel.
I just want to read off any ECU error codes that might be present. More than happy to use laptop based cable and software.

Petrol cars must have this socket as required by law.
Diesel passenger cars are not required to have it until 2004. For diesel commercial vans (like the Transit) it's 2007.
It's there because that is easier and cheaper for Ford to manufacture.
Communication protocol is Ford company protocol.
And No, your obd2 scanner won't work on it.
By the way, obd2 is something that exists in the USA and Canada only. It has no meaning in Europe and no car here (except imported cars from the USA) will comply with obd2 rules. Over here we have EOBD, which is very similar to obd2, but in some key areas it differs - like the starting date and when to set a diagnostic trouble code.

Thanks for that, I had read that it was 2004 for Diesel cars, I just find it strange that my car has the correct socket, in the place that complies with EOBD regulations (within 18" of the steering wheel).
So what sort of equipment do I need, or what protocol do I need to use to read any error code from my pre-EOBD Mondeo?

The correct socket is not strange, it's good thinking by Ford. When you buy something in bulk it's cheaper - that's why this socket is in every Ford.
The second advantage is that they only have to make 1 cable for their own diagnostic machines. Cheaper again.
Have a look here: http://www.autoenginuity.com/product...ware.html#EI01
That claims to have support for Mondeo TDCI's.

Oh, but it does have OBD.
OBD is a general term which means: On-board Diagnostic.
Nothing is regulated by law and every manufacturer is free to choose his own method.
Even the first Cosworth's already had OBD. Granted, just a flashing led, but it still is On-board Diagnostics.
Another Ford scanner: http://www.forscan.org/

Hi RichieST. I have a Focus 02 tdci and have had no joy with elm adaptors. Can you tell me what software you use? I have an android platform and was thinking of Forscan and buying the F Super adaptor? Been pulling my hair out!
Thanks
