Default 1.6 Zetec Reving Problem

HELP PLEASE :- I own an Escort Mk 6 with a Zetec 1.6 engine on an R plate & its driving me nuts. The problem is when starting from cold & sometimes hot,the engine runs at between 1500 & 3000 revs. Now for the bit that I just can not get my head around (nor can anyone I have spoken to) If I drive a mile or so up the road & stop at a junction, the revs drop as they should to about 900 revs, all is well you might think,BUT,if I do not have to stop I can drive for miles & while I am driving,if I take it out gear & coast the engine revs stay at 1500-3000 revs & will not go any lower. If I bring the car to a stop,as soon as the car is stationary, the engine revs will drop to its ideling revs & the problem then disappears.

I live in hope.

Regards

Don't bother with the VSS, vehicle speed sensor, the FACT that it holds the revs up when costing tells you it is getting a clean signal.
Try a new coolant temp sender for the ECU, NOT the temp gauge one, as idle sped is based upon operating temperature mainly.

Firstly, thanks for your replys,I have fitted a new Coolant Temp sensor as well as the temp gauge one.I have just tried to reset my ECU by disconnecting the battery overnight & doing what the, dare i say it,Haynes manual says & I will be trying the results later today when the engine has cooled down.I will let you know if it was successful.
I also now think that the Air Flow sensor (MASS) could be at fault as when the engine is running & I disconnect the multi-plug the engine runs as normal,no change in revs,if you rev the engine it runs as normal but should this not happen.

Thanks again

might not be this but, have you had a look at and cleaned the ISCV?

Some will run with MAF disconnected.
To reset the ecu, you do not need to take the battery lead/s off at all.
Look in the main fusebox under the bonnet, in there will be a fuse of 3 AMPS, this will be marked KAM, just take this out for 1 minute, put back job done.
KAM stands for Keep Alive Memory, it stores the fine tune settings of the engine running.

I have just got back after a run,it has improved it but not cured it.I will try removing the said fuse but after disconnecting the battery I assume it was to the same effect.
I will also try to clean the ISCV but excuse my ignorance as I do not know what it is or where it would be located.

Excellent Forum,Helpfull & Friendly.

i have the same problem with my cabriolet 1600 zetec

i have removed the ISCV and cleaned it , no help , fitted a new coolant sensor

when we got the car i did a big service with all the fuel filter , air filter , oil and filter , plugs , leads, cambelt and tensioner and V belt but it made no differance

we went to the ford garage today and they tell me we need a new ECU

i have been around fords for a few years but have never heard of this ??

any advice because the ISCV is €150 and a new ECU will be about €1500 fitted and programmed , i can use a 2nd hand one but still needs to be programmed !!

Please help
