Mk2 Mondeo Immobiliser problems
Hi Folks,
I have a recurring problem with the immobiliser. It will activate first thing when trying to start and also whilst driving at random. I lose ignition and starter until it allows starting again usually after several turns of the ignition key from off to start. I've looked for the immobiliser where the Haynes manual states (Under the centre console) but its not there. Anyone any idea where it is hidden on the Mk2 Mondeo. Mine is a '97 model 5door.
Fords want more than the value of the car to investigate and fix it. The last journey on the M11 had it activate whilst passing a load of trucks. Down to 25mph before it started again, very scary!! so its off the road now until a solution is found. Hopefully someone here can assist.
Cheers

Hi Dave,
I tried swapping out the ecu with a known good one but still had the same problem. there have been issues with the Bosch immobiliser fitted to the MK1 where broken solder joints caused the same problems. Unfortunately Ford in their wisdom seem to have moved it on the Mk2 Mondeo, but where to ???.
Cheers

On my MK1 mondy I had it was under the dash bit below the radio area, on the floor.
Some suffer from bad joints as they do get condensation inside caused by the heat of exhaust etc under car heating area where the immoby sits then cooling when you turn off etc.
I took mine out of mondy and resoldered EVERY JOINT, then spray with CONTACT CLEANER, elcetrical not glasses!!.
Then blow with air line to get rid of any residue.
Anyway did all this put it back and bingo all well, 2 years later.
It may not be the imobiliser but the KEY, especially if it has been dropped recently.
The trick is to wrap key in TIN FOIL for about 1/2 hour, then insert into ignition, turn on/off 3 times , THIS WILL DISCAHRGE ANY STATIC that has built up, it's free so worth a go, it does work on some if this is the problem, as I have done it.

Hi Tabetha,
Thanks for the info. My last car was a Mk 1 and I had to do the same. The immobiliser was exactly where you described. This one though, does not have the immobiliser fitted in the same location which is the problem...no one seems to know where Fords have hidden it I've looked in the more obvious places: behind the glovebox, under the footwell areas. I'm not too keen on pulling out the dash etc if its not going to be there though.
Thanks again.

ther are two different types of anti theft systems on the mondeos that were bulit in 1997 and 1998 one passive and one active so my ford work shop manual says the passise is located under the dash behind the glove box more so up in the dash, the active one it doesnt give a location for this.
this is what it says to remove the passive one.

Many thanks for the info. I will have the wife get it looked at as soon as possible. My Mondeo was built mid '97 so should be the passive unit. If not, I will check it out when I get home. (I've been sent to the Gulf Area for a couple of weeks)
Cheers
