I THINK they are some of the better ones before you go for full blown Garret core as per the spec r ones.

You would hope that the thicker the core the better the cooler?

If you wanted to improve a cooler I think you can get a fabricator to weld wings on to it to scoop the air in and not let the air rush around the sides of he cooler, in effect sealing it to the front of the car.

The Airtec is a good cooler, just not up to the standard of £1000+ coolers like the spec R one which has the benefit of the scoop plus is shorter (lower height) and therefore leaves more air to flow in to the radiator / and or air filter.

Did anyone actually weigh the coolers of the different brands?
I always found Airtec coolers very heavy compared to the Pro Alloy cooler of a friend of mine.

Actually there's diminishing returns the thicker the core is because by the time the airflow has gone 2/3rds of the way through the core its lost a lot of its temperature differential and hence cooling capacity.

I've gone thicker because that's all I could do.

I get that about diminishing returns BUT you could argue that 100mm will still cool better than 75mm as even if the last 25mm is not as efficient as the first 75mm then at least if 1% efficient then still doing more?

Yes absolutely, just have to weigh it up in your mind that's all between increased weight and volume to fill (possible increase in lag).

I doubt my intercooler will cost me much over £500 when done and it was all completely bespoke. When you look at how much some of the inferior coolers cost it's a lot for not a lot!
Garrett have so many sizes as well.

They apparently flow better, but I'm not convinced there is significant volume difference between it and the 75mm unit, as the 100mm unit is smaller frontal area but of course deeper.

Run a airtech 100mm on mine, bit of a pain to fit as few mods needed, but it is good and a fraction of the price of a spec r without having too wait. Obviously its not going to be as good but wenny runs one on his mk3, that does 9's all day long and puts out almost 800hp so thats good enough for me.It has a scoop at the front to direct air to it too.

U can't get much better a recommendation than that. Seen that car go up the strip at Santa pod it's mental. Them aa and Rac badges weren't designed to go that fast lol

I have to admit that this is very tempting to avoid the pain of the spec r one in terms of lead times, having the car there for 3 weeks and delays, I am sure the bespoke spec r would be better as he can suit it to my 205 front end and mount the rad to it and force as much air through it and not around it but a bit of tig welding on that airtec one would see a lot of that done. As you say Wenny doesn't seem to be hampered much.

I can see that has the scoop on it, what are people's thoughts on adding some ally mounting points to it and seal rubber from the cooler to the front bumper inlet part of the car so that you are sealing the air to only go through the cooler? I thought of rubber to allow for vibration and engine movement?

I was thinking of rubber where I have highlighted and moving the number plate to a sticker on the bonnet

I know a chap who owns a company that makes the rubber face masks for fighter pilots who could do the correct spec of rubber for it

I have ordered one of the 100mm ones as a stop gap until I can send mine to spec R, I can monitor the temps and see if they are within acceptable levels and always sell it on when I upgrade, I am sure it will be better than my RS500 cooler and allows a bit more room to spin the air filter over and have it sucking in cold air through the grill. I may experiment with sealing the rest off with rubber or flexi carbon sheet.

Which ever way you go out on the road it's going to work. But fact is real life data proves the expensive core in the spec r one produces far lower charge air temp. If your mapper likes to work with low temps to keep things safe and on point with high horse power cars then you don't have much choice if you want what he tells you he can get with certain parts.
I bet if you compare the charge air temps of a car at the end of a very short 1/4 mile with one out on the road on a sunny day flat out in 4th the difference in temps would be shocking over the two cores

Very true. Mark was holding my car back as the 500 cooler was not cooling enough. I will end up spec r or similar to Marks spec but this will be a good stop gap and then I can dump the car with Whoever makes it and leave it there, perhaps when I am on holiday. The car has been off the road for way too long and I want a good bit of use before I lose it for a few weeks. I need to get Mark to check the map for my hart inlet and by adding this cooler we can see what those two are doing.

Ha. My thoughts exactly. I had someone else say the same about the Garrett core, as good as they might be You won't get those results without adding something else.

I've seen between 5-7 degrees above ambient on a intercooler we chose for a customer. It wasn't expensive either. That's logged via a calibrated sensor on Syvecs so I personally see the Airtec unit as more than adequate in reality and for Cost

Going by the experience and know how of the man who built tuned and took the readings that intercooler made I'd say recalibrating the sensor would be pointless and the results they quote what ever they are will be right

You'd think you'd need to be doing 80mph in -10degree weather in order to achieve -temps on the intercooler. It is impressive, was the car just sitting stationary while this was recorded?

I suppose that with 'negative temps' it was meant in comparison to ambient temperature and not below 0. But even lower than ambient sounds a bit strange to me. You are cooling air with ambient air, how can the cooled air be colder than the air that you are using to cool?

I took negative as output temp being less than the cooling air temp.
Highly unlikely IMO.

Intercooler sprays would have a surface cooling effect on the Intercooler, however, nothing like this was mentioned.....

And the discussion was on intercooler performance comparisons.
