Default HELP NEEDED! very strange zetec problem! *sorted!*

right, its a 1.8 escort lump, stalled it last night and it wouldnt start again, got towed home and left it last night, tried this morning and it started! killed it, went inside, then started it again to move it into the garage. left it 20 mins, gone to start again and nothing!

its got spark, fuelpumps priming, injectors are pulsing, but it wont start!

while i was out double checking everything a second ago, it fired up and ran fine for a minute or so, then i killed it and tried to start it again....nothing!!

im thinking it could be a dicky fuel pressure regulator just sticking wide open and send all the fuel back to the tank, but its just a long shot!

anyone else got any serious ideas?

got spark

cam timings right

fuelpump is working fine

injectors are pulsing

Is the engine turning over when you try and start it?

and is it in the car in your sig? or is it still in the escort?

If you have sparks and the timings correct it can only be fuel or compression thats at fault.

Presuming all the electrical sensors are ok.

its got to be a sensor fault as it is dont seem to be a constant
problem.

Crank position sensor that goes into the gearbox housing?

pull the fuel rail off and get someone to turn it over so you can check all 4 give a good squirt of fuel, check the fuel pressure also with a guage if you have one?

Have you compression tested it just to rule out a head gasket etc?

Faulty crank sensor would show as no spark.

well, earlier it started while i was testing the injectors were pulsing with a multimeter. just gone to start it again and nowt, so thought id check the injectors again to make sure it wasnt a fluke earlier.

after the same thing happening three times, itll start with the multimeter over the connections of the injector plug, can plug the injector in and itll run fine....stop the engine and try and start it up with the injector clip on as normal, and it wont start! use the multimeter and it will!!!!

WTF??!

fyi the battery is at 12.2v, havnt got a fuel pressure gauge, and havnt got a compression tester!

its weird that itll start everytime with the multimeter over the injector connections, but not with it all connected up.

right....well.....

it seems like if you disconnect ANY injector....itll start up....can connect that injector back up again, and itll run fine. wont start with all four injectors connect.

even tried it which cranking over, with all four connected it wasnt firing, then disconnected one and it chugged into life.

what im guessing is the fuel pressure regular is on the way out, with 3 connected, theres a little bit more pressure for each injector which is allowing the engine to start, then the increased vacum in the inlet manifold is closing the regulator up a little more to allow it to run properly....maybe?!

The Plug on the right of injector number 4 is the plug for the
CAM position Sensor! (IIRC)

(very similar to the injector plugs yes)

Fuel pressure is a good thing to be thinking (assuming that plug is correct)

If it has a schrader valve on it anywhere just put an airline gague on it to read the pressure.

Drive it to the petrol station and use thier air gague. It wont harm it, and at the least it will give you an indication of fuel pressure .

well those plugs are the right way round, just taken the fuel pressure reg out and cant see anything pysically wrong with it but doubt there would be anything visible anyway.

darn't take the one out my mums car incase i break it! ill be in the shit then

got a 2.0 granada efi inlet here, tempted to chuck the fuel rail off that onto mine but dunno if i can be arsed with the hassle!

pumps fine as theres fuel going down the return lines when cranking, if the reg was ok and pump was fucked, this wouldnt happen! filter has done about 150miles and dont think disonecting one injector would make it work!

does runa coolant temp sensor yeah, found this out today, ive put the cvh sender in but will put the zetec one back in and connect it back up again.
