I have just got my MSD chip. Which is going to be fitted into a L8.
I purchased the L8 from Gary at RS classics without a chip.
In MSD instructions it says to make note when removing the old chip for the correct fitting of the new with regards to fitting the correct way round.
As I had no chip to remove can anyone advise on the correct way round the chip should be.
I will keep trying MSD but need to set up my Tps this weekend.
There should be a notch or a little circle at one end of the chip indicating pin 1 of the chip. The chip holder has a semi circle cut out at the top of the chip holder in the picture above. The chip with a mark / circle at one end matches the end of the chip holder. Match the two and away you go.
If you look at the pics it has no notch and there was no chip in the ECU when i purchased it.
So if that's the case which way round does the key fit as it can fit either.
Cheers
I can see a big notch on it. If you compare the two ends of the chip can you not see a big notch differing between the two ends?
The chip has already been fitted to the key so ignore that. Stu would have done that for you, there is a notch etched on the face on the key showing its orientation.
just put the chip into the baby board on the key so the big cut out notch matches the notch on the other chip on the board.
Hi, if you look at the chip from the top, the end nearest the blue e on the sticker has a little notch and that needs to point towards the outside edge of the ecu
The chip has a notch. If you look at the pics as you say, you can clearly see a notch. In your 1st pic in post #6 the notch is the small cutout at the bottom of the chip. Under the chip notch the extender board has 3 small notches too. It is clearly evident from the pics. That is what the notch is.
Anyway to avoid confusion, place the chip in the exact same orientation as the chip that is already installed in the ECU, to the left of the one you're installing. If you look at that chip it has the notch at the top of the chip and it has the little circle beside pin 1 like my earlier post.
Let us know how you get on but it really is as straightforward as that.
Many thanks....But i have NO chip fitted to the ECU when i got it, so i cannot compare and old chip to this.
I purchased the ECU and NO chip at all was fitted.
I understand the notches and i admit would be easy if i could compare a chip that was already fitted , but i don't.
Jason's instructions where the notch faces the outer edge of the ECU...
Just need to be 100% as i do not want to blow anything.
Cheers guys

You dont need an old chip. The baby board has another chip on it, look at that one and fit yours the same way
The chip socket your going to plug the chip into on the board also has a notch
Holy shit bollocks.....
Seen it my eyes are terrible....
Sorry for being a dumb ass guys.
Your help is soooooo much appreciated.
Cheers
Next up you need to remove the baby board and cut the corner off so you can put the lid back on the ecu. Make sure you note how the baby board socket plugs into the ecu motherboard as the motherboard socket is 2 pins longer and the socket plugs in to one side of it
Both sides are lower the opposite end is tucked under the tab also
The lid still does not sit 100% flat though.
