5k for a 2007 Focus Zetec?
As some of you have been seeing my posts over the last few months I've been looking for a new motor, while the Mrs Micra has been fine while I was working in London now I'm running about Heathrow way I do need a set of wheels and I can't steel the Micra as the Mrs needs it.
So finally after months of waiting my savings of five years finally comes through. First ai was going to spend all of it on a car, but typically, as women do, she wants us to go on holiday and get the kitchen done, so it's going to leave me about 5k to spend.
Was looking at Audis, but they have shocking mileage on them for that price.
But the mother in law is selling her Mk2 Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec on an 07 plate with 30k on the clock for £5k.
My question is, is that a reasonable price?
What's the depreciation on the focuses like? How much value would it lose in say two years if I want to sell up and upgrade?

Seems an alright price if its in good condition. I would have thought a petrol focus would have been fine unless your doing a lot of miles.
My previous diesels were not all that much better economy for normal driving and diesels are usually more expensive to buy.

Diesel fuel is more expensive, diesel engines are generally more expensive when they go wrong, servicing costs are generally more expensive, modern diesel engines (or more importantly the fancy nonsense that is bolted to modern diesel engines) make them rather unreliable with their fancy fuel pumps and injectors, DMFs, DPFs, Dee Doo Daa Daas etc.
Unles I was doing an intergalactic mileage every year, there's no way in the world I'd buy a diesel over an economical petrol engine!

If your doing not a lot of miles, Why would you want a diesel ?
Around town, I was only getting early to mid 30's mpg from my ST TDCi Mondeo and that was driving sensible.

price seems fair but does depend on:
Condition
miles
history
trim level
colour
I picked up a 2005 1.6tdci for my sister the other year, nice spec and she loves it, the thing is like a little tank.

fair enough that diesels have more to go wrong but modern normally aspirated petrol stuff with similar power outputs just seem flat as a fart in comparison, i dont do that many miles in my st tdci and really hasnt cost me a lot plus when i go on a long journey i know it aint gonna cost me a fortune in fuel, also when i sell theres gonna be somebody who wants it

the focus 1.6 petrol is rubbish on fuel, follow what chip says, ignore miles on an Audi and just do it,great cars.
Incidently, passats are basically the same car and usually a bit cheaper.
You could get a 320d for that money too, good motors.
Be wary of the ford tdci's,great cars when they work but very pricey when they go wrong, which can be at any mileage.
Seat is another option from the vw stable,or a rust free merc, which is rare.

I've seen 2005 '05' Focus Ghia's on a garage forecourts for £4500 - £5000, so thats a good price.
I'd also steer clear of a diesel unless the mileage you are doing negates the cost to MPG differential between petrol & diesel. Plus Diesel's are more expensive to buy than their petrol equivalents.....
In an earlier topic similar to this I recall someone pointing out that the modern Diesel engine will suffer from a whole range of costly problems if not 'used' properly such as dpf's, Duel mass fly's, injectors, fuel pumps etc etc etc, which will be more costly to repair if go wrong than a decent petrol. i recall someone mentioning that injectors on a TDCI 130ps are circa £250 each at a main dealer
if your doing circa 20,000 miles + per year, then go for a diesel
If your 'averaging' 6000 - 12,000 miles per year get a petrol, a decent mk2 1.8.......as you wont make any savings from fuel economy....
