Default My gf's car crash - Insurance claim pay out help.+ phrase.

From my previous post about her crash

What is the best way of getting a sensible price from the insurers.

She is fully comp and we recovered the car ourselfs, it did no damage to fences / walls / property or any 3rd party just wild trees.

We have lloked for rough prices on pistonheads etc, my mate was saying the there is a phrase to use - are you excersising my legal right to emdemnity or something similar that should make thaem pay a good book price.

Anybody got any past experiences on how to get a fair pay out, I only ask as it was not her fault, a combination between the road camber and a thin skim of mud.

Thank you

Decline their first offer and provide adverts of similar cars and you should come up good. I managed to get the £500 offer on our old XR2i up to £2200 with a bit of arguing (took 6 month snear as damn it)

Yeah as above, trawl through adverts, ebay, autotrader, pistonheads etc for cars of similar condition/mileage/spec, and then they will have to give you something around the same. They should pay you 'market value'. At the end of the day, you have to be able to replace the car on a like for like basis, so anything less would be unacceptable.

Make sure that the value of the car is LOCAL to you as well

They often have a habbit of valuing against cars for sale 200miles away in some chepo area

Not sure if its true but i was told not to accept any cheque from insurance company (well under the value of ur motor) as its classed as part payment allowing them to drag there heals in a battle of wits from then on.
Anyways got offered 7k for a 10k car i wrote off after 6 weeks. Tore the 7k cheque up and sent it back with 'print screens' of all matching cars on autotrader valued at 10 -11k. Next cheque they sent was for 10k.

print off as many ads as you can of vehicles within 60miles ( this is classed as a fair and reasonable distance for someone to travel to buy a replacement vehicle)

if they offer you a figure that is not acceptable ask them to justify there value, if they say glasses then visit the glasses website and you should find a statement on there from glasses saying that there valuations should not be used to value a vehicle for insurance purposes.

Agree 100% with Furry i did that and got my old A6 2002 plate which i thought would fetch around 2-3k due to having 186,000 miles on the clock , They offererd £2500 based on GLASSES guide which i said glasses guide doeenst mean i can find one at that price

Got paid out 4750 due to the only one of the same spec and mileage (it had 132,000) was for sale on Autotrader by a dealer for that much

Chuffed just stand your ground in every instance

Check what her policy says as to wether they will offer market value or book value. If its book then your pretty stuffed, if they state market value find all the over priced ones you can and email them to the insurer

Indemnity is the word you were looking for. Basically means to put you in the position you was before the loss.

Wow guys what a response, thank you so much for talking the time to write those replys! I was going to wash it and tidy it up but they are just going to pick it up, she has to send in her V5 and service history then they will give her a value over the phone / letter. I asked my mate to get a value today from his work if he could manage from the glass book, it was £625 trade and £1625 retail ( some differance) but this was before I knew they couldent use that for insurance. But If they say quote glass and I can quote the £1625 back then that would be fine if they accepted as the cars seem to be sitting around £1200. I will start printing ads off and thank you for the tip about the local ones, they can be so dammed sneaky, using ads will be a big help.
Indemnity - great thanks at least I can pronouce it and know what it means now, I dont know whether to say that with the first quote or use it before they even quote so they will offer a better price to start and not have to be mucked around for so long.

Once again thank you all very much

where is the car getting picked to go ?

also what company is she insured by ?

as most insure companys do there valuations of pics taking by the salvage company now to save sending people out to view each indivitual car and they work of just 11 pictures

but some insurance companys ask for and extra 10 images of pre accident damage rust , scratches , wear etc and oviously goes against your value

Rule of thumb always decline first offer!
Insurance companies will always offer a low first offer as there are some really skint people out there that will take it just get some money quick. but like said you need to print about 3-6 other adverts with the same year and make of car and similar mileage because at the end of the day YOU NEED TO BUY A EQUILIVENT CAR howether much you paid for it. My Girlfriend was hit head on last month in her 2003 HDI 307 FSH blah blah they come and offered her 2200 so i provided them with so many adverts they didint have a leg to stand on now they have come back with a 3300 which i wanted in the first place.
Patience is a virtue!
