Default PS3/External HD Question

Maybe a bit noobish, i dunno.

Ive got a 120GB external hard drive, movies/music etc on it - could i plug it in to ps3 and browse it as i would on the PC? Play a movie or music through the tv?

If so, where is the option on the PS3 to find external devices?

Yes mate, should work fine. The device will show up on Music, Photo's and videos. Just open it by highlighting it and pressing "X". If that doesn't work press triangle, display all and that will open it

I use a 16GB USB stick like this and it works very well. I copy all videos off my PC and play them through this on the PS3

power up the external hd first then place the usb lead into one of the front sockets ..ive got 4.... 60GB version the best one

the ps3 then will find your external HD

you have to play around to find the films but DONT change any of the ps3 settings no need to

You can through programs like Tversity etc.. but it can be pretty poor sometimes. and that requires having your pc running and the ps3 synced to it.

Your external HD format is probably EXFAT rather than FAT32, it need to be FAT32 to work with the PS3. So in other words, it will not work.

The best thing to do is buy the 320GB one from Play (very easy to change) and then move the films and music etc onto the PS3 by using a USB stick.

needs to be formatted using the FAT32 file system. can you copy the files over to your PC drive? Then you can reformat and use.

Actually on this one, I need to get a HDD to back up my PS3 and transfer all my files to so I can put a new one in. Anyone know a good priced one with at least 60gig?

If you want an easy solution, just buy a memory stick. Upload all files to this and plug it into your PS3. Works fine for me and no fucking about copying to the hard drive taking up space

I may upgrade the PS3 memory tho as Ive used most my 60GB

Just use your PC as a media server as above, Windows 7 ultimate has it built in.

As said above there is no support in ps3 for reading ntfs formatted hard drives, it will only recognise fat32 formatted drives which is same format as all the usb sticks.

use a prog like http://www.partition-manager.com/
you can then partition a section of the HD to fat32 and the ps3 will see it no probs, there is a limit to the size a fat32 hd can be formatted too (limitation of 32 GB) because any size over that performance is affected so windows made it so you can't format bigger. but 32gb would be plenty of space just for use on the ps3, i do exactly this with my mp3 and music files and it works perfect

Had the same fault with mine and needed to reformat it not hard to do tho. You do know and external hard drive with only hold music/video/photo for game data such as demos and stuff they will only store on the internal hd. So imo id get one in take a few mins and ive never looked back.
O and if any of you fancy a game psn is Marcgear. Just say your from here.

I binned my 40 gig hard drive once Div X support came out. I put a 320 gig drive in there. Real peice of piss to do and the PS3 format and OS install takes about 10 mins or so I'd say. May be quicker with the new firmware. All my films are stored on a 500 gig Iomega external hard drive.

I think you must be right wee sacs.

Spent all day trying to get the PS3 to read it but no joy at all, got plenty USB sticks kicking about though so will try them, think the biggest is only 8GB though but it'll do.

Thanks bitchezz.

Brian, Pirate Bay/btjunkie/torrentz may have films on them in torrent format, dowload the torrent and Utorrent software and you are sorted.

Use a program called utorrent, simple to use. Just make sure you read comments on torrent sites as some torrents are virus's.
