Your external HD format is probably EXFAT rather than FAT32, it need to be FAT32 to work with the PS3. So in other words, it will not work.
The best thing to do is buy the 320GB one from Play (very easy to change) and then move the films and music etc onto the PS3 by using a USB stick.

Spent all day trying to get the PS3 to read it but no joy at all, got plenty USB sticks kicking about though so will try them, think the biggest is only 8GB though but it'll do.
