Default could timing affect starting ?

Hi,

After recently doing my headgasket and also lowering the compression my car has become VERY hard to start......I usually have to bump start it I also fitted a brand new piper T2 cam and re set the cam timing to '0' on the vernier.

Now considering the dizzy is in the same place as it was before all this work was done could this cause poor starting ? It is most noticeable when the engine is cold or has been left for a long amount of time but even when the engine is warm / hot it never seems to fire up properly, it will sort of splutter and then start.

Strange thing is though when I finally get it to start it runs fine (apart from a low tickover) so does this rule out the timing issue ?

cheers, Duncan (s2 erst by the way)

Now im no expert and im ready to be shot down in flames but...i would say timing will effect start up,if the piston is just below top dead center on the up stroke and it sparks then any mixture that has combusted would try to push the piston down to early.

Have you checked cold start injector is properly connected. IIRC their are several connectors that can be mixed up But yes timing can affect starting.

no, only lowered it to 7.9-1

all connectors are in the correct places, I tried unplugging the cold start injector earlier but it made no difference at all ! Definately getting fuel up to it though cos we bled it.

I am pretty sure the cam timing is correct, if it wasnt the car wouldnt drive very well would it (car drives ok) What about the dizzy position, how could that effect starting ? I did notice earlier when driving home from work that I get a lot of 'pops & bangs' out of the exhaust So as Im getting fuel to the injectors Im thinking it could be the fuel ecu ?

depends on what timing your talking about?

Cam timing?

Ign timing (dizzy)

and yes both can effect start up, idle and running. Get them checked

both really, but what I'm trying to find out is that if they were both, or one of them, set wrong would the car run really rough as well as not starting properly ? As I said above, it drives ok after its started
