Depends some people like low down grunt so would hate the way a vtec delivers its power.
I love them cause i like driving like a complete tit which is how you have to drive them

The thing with this is they give really good fuel economy and drivability as an everyday car with no need to use the vtec unless you are giving it billy big boot.
Like i said though they aint to everyones taste

VTEC? No thanks, I prefer the feel of forced induction or large engine displacement as opposed to the "thrash me" mentality. I test drove a Type-R and the VTEC wasn't really noticeable plus it sounded like I was driving a chainsaw around.
But looking at those VTEC videos, I found this.....it's obviously a wind up, but funny nonetheless

1.8 civic which model exactly?
Theres a few different types of vtec aswell, other than the type found on the type R's its not really worth mentioning....even then its nothing spectacular. The feeling of speed is largley down to the gearing in the type R's imo, i mean you go blazing though the gears knocking it off the limiter, you think your flying but then you look at the speedo and your hovering around legal motorway speed limits.
When driving the switch over is more audible than anything else, lol.

Never experienced a turboed Vtec myself but its probably pretty good.
You just cant compare Vtec engines to turbo ones like the cossie.
Turbos all the way for me !

1.8 vtec is the one found in the 4 door saloon, the ones with vtec stickers down each side.
I went in a Integra SiR, that was pretty good, went well.

Never been in one, seen hundreds of vids and tbh they do seem to go pretty well. I'll confess I'm addicted to the noise more than anything
so it sounds and feels as if you're in a proper race car giving it 7k-9k really screaming through the gears.

my mates got a B16 EK4, jsut put a B18 in it, its spot on.
also my other mate ste had a B18 EG civic, ITR gearbox, diff inlet, TB etc..... was an awesome car, so much torque over the B16 then when it came into VTEC it pulled like a train.
if your gonna get VTEC but an integra

One of my mates has a 04 civic type r and I think its awesome the only mod is a 57i kit and its well quick and sounds fantastic, I'm even thinking of getting an older one as a daily runner I like it that much. You really have to drive one to realise how good they are and you can abuse it all day long without any worries.

It is adictive, but you have to rag the tits out of it. Great on mad days, but for everyday driving you just never get to use the power and makes the car feel slow compared to something with a lot of low down grunt.
Personally i love lazy grunt! But a rev head of an engine is great fun on those play days.
I have had both types of cars so can comment from experience

People need to realise that vtec engine tend to be small displacment normally aspirated engines with the exeption of the 3.0 and 3.2 in the nsx, so comparing them to a cossie is silly. Compare them as they should be compared and they make sense and can be seen for how good they really are.
crx i-vt to xr2i
integra type-r to mk5 rs2000
civic type-r to st170
There cracking cars for what they are but like i have said above you either love them or hate them and there not to everyones taste, but turbo vtec motors are very very quick and seem to do the business

S2000 are RWD VTEC.. pretty tuneable too, bolt on supercharger conversion will see a very easy 300hp at wheels with some of them making near 400whp with a bigger pulley etc.
I have a DC2 Integra and have had a couple of UK Civic VTi before... the difference is massive, the jap import DC2 I've got now is really impressive in a straight line but the handling is the best thing about it by far.
Cheers

How do you rate the SiR's? thats the one i went in with a mate, had LSD and a few bits off the type r bolted on and some kind of quick change aswell, felt very quick around the lanes/sharp bends etc, but on open roads like dual carriageways it didnt feel that quick, was almost like your willing it on abit, but still a cool car

My st170 uses ford's version of VTEC, with both a dual stage inlet (DSI) with inlet manifold runner control and a changeover of cam profile at 6000rpm. It lacks a lot of torque low down in the rev range, but hey, i suppose you get reasonable mpg!
After 6000 rpm and it does fly, however the 6spd box takes a lot of stirring to keep the revs high if you want to get moving! I would love a turbo'd car, but as its my daily drive at approx 20k a year then it'll have to do!

To be honest, the B18c engine is a decent one.. I'm not totally up on the lower DC2 range, but think that although the SiR lacks the TypeR valvetrain/cams, it will still be around 170bhp so wont be ballistic on the straights. But like you said, the handling is still there, specially as I *think* that the SiR uses the same 96-spec gearbox that I've got in my car with the factory LSD.
The TypeR isn't ballistic on the straights, but in a test between my friends Impreza STi (c280bhp) and my Integra, there was around a car length in it up a hill and along a 1 mile stretch of dual carriageway... with the Impreza pulling the car length on me. Not bad for a 1.8 non-turbo, he was fully commited and said that before we went for it he thought he was going to drive away from me easily.
I drove a UK DC2 TypeR and was VERY underwhelmed by it... got offered an amazing deal by the Honda Dealership but decided it was too much of a jump from my Impreza. Then a couple of months later, a friend got a freshly imported JDM DC2 TypeR and it drove very differently.. despite only being 10ps more powerful on paper?!
I'm not a Honda fan boy, they're good at what they do and if you compare like for like regarding age and performance... they tend to produce better cars than most other manufacturers. BUT, if you compare price to price, then there are WAY quicker or more solid cars out there for the same money which is what some people get confused over, regarding the Cossie comments etc.
Cheers,
Grant
