To be honest, the B18c engine is a decent one.. I'm not totally up on the lower DC2 range, but think that although the SiR lacks the TypeR valvetrain/cams, it will still be around 170bhp so wont be ballistic on the straights. But like you said, the handling is still there, specially as I *think* that the SiR uses the same 96-spec gearbox that I've got in my car with the factory LSD.
The TypeR isn't ballistic on the straights, but in a test between my friends Impreza STi (c280bhp) and my Integra, there was around a car length in it up a hill and along a 1 mile stretch of dual carriageway... with the Impreza pulling the car length on me. Not bad for a 1.8 non-turbo, he was fully commited and said that before we went for it he thought he was going to drive away from me easily.
I drove a UK DC2 TypeR and was VERY underwhelmed by it... got offered an amazing deal by the Honda Dealership but decided it was too much of a jump from my Impreza. Then a couple of months later, a friend got a freshly imported JDM DC2 TypeR and it drove very differently.. despite only being 10ps more powerful on paper?!
I'm not a Honda fan boy, they're good at what they do and if you compare like for like regarding age and performance... they tend to produce better cars than most other manufacturers. BUT, if you compare price to price, then there are WAY quicker or more solid cars out there for the same money which is what some people get confused over, regarding the Cossie comments etc.
Cheers,
