Default Redundancy???

Hi all

over the last couple months we've been told that the company i work for isnt performing well, and sales need to be on the up, however 2 weeks ago we we're told theres a very strong possibility that some of us may be made redundant.

Now i'm the installation engineer/fitter for the company, and from the way people are talking i could be 1 of the 1's to go, as all our install work that i currently do could be out sourced.

My question really is this, i've been with the company 2 1/2 years, so if i am the chosen one for the boot, what will i be looking at as a redundancy package.

i agree with the above - its the state figure they work with.

but it can also be effected by your age etc.

thats what i thought really, heard some wild ideas that it was a month for every year you work for the company, so just thought i'd check.

i'm 29, BTW, will be 30 in december, so i dont know how much of a difference that makes, if any.

Someone I know got 3 weeks money for each year they'd worked, so a month might not be that wild. Depends a lot on the size of the heart and the size of the pockets of the firm I guess...

for some people it is a month for every year.

i work for the railway and my terms and conditions are still honoured as being Britsh Rails from the day i joined back in 1991.

for me, up until we were finaly bought out and our department was broken up and sold off - i get a months wages for every completed year at my current rate, then from then on i get the state basic - which as your finding out isnt worth poo.

we recently went thru it, and several guys who shouldnt have been put on the redundancy list were, for them having only been on 7 odd year they wouldnt have even got a complete months wages as there package.

youve also got to be carefull of your annual leave entitlement, they may suddenly say its pro-rata as its your final year and may claim days back from you if youve already gone over you allowment.

then also, you should be given a weeks notice for every completed year you have been on aswell

companys can be arseholes if they need to, especially if they want to cut the amount they want/need to be paying out.

but at the same time, there is a government minimum they can get away with - so best to do a quick bit of research before hand!

When i was made redundant i got the goverment statatory minimum which was 1 weeks money(around Ł250 at the time) for every year u worked there if u have been in the company more than 2 years iirc. This obviously can differ tremendously if a generous company contract or there is a union involved.

i dont think a union being involved will make a big difference if the company wants to pay the government minimum, as they are not breaking any laws in paying a lower amount.

at the current rates etc - if your below 22 the amount also drops.
one of our guys has just been made redundant and his redundancy is running out 3 weeks before his 22nd birthday, so hes not getting what he thought either - which you must agree is sightly unfair in many ways!

I'll try to keep this brief.

http://www.berr.gov.uk/whatwedo/empl...page33683.html

Im the same age as you and had worked at the company Ive just been made redundant from for 2 & 3/4 years.

They gave me Ł660 redundancy (2 weeks of Ł330) plus 5 days untaken holiday and the money Id worked.

i.e. The very minimum they legally had to. Bear in mind redundancy is NOT taxed.

there is a statutory minimum that they have to pay that is widely published on the net, but they can be more generous if they wish.

so you think you get redundancy pay of Ł330 for every completed year, and then Ł330 in severance pay aswell for every completed year?

never heard of that one before!!!

We've just been told at our place that a few are being made redundant. and will be receiving the minium recommended package.

if youre under 41 its Ł300 per year you have worked there, over 41 Ł330 per year you have worked there up to a maximum of 20 year claim.

but at the end of the day it is the companies discretion if they pay more than that

my company is losing 180 staff at the moment firstly volantary,we were all interviewed and shown our figures. the guys over 50 with long service 30+ years are getting lumpers of around 120k with pensions of approx 14k a year...
no wonder 300+ said they want to go pmsl
can't wait to see the whinging when the guys that think there getting out are told they can't go!!
been only 36 they only offered my 27k to go..
seems a lot but I would then need to find a job and my job is very specialised..
