A local place called Pemco Pitstop are an approved LPG fitter, and run their SWB Transit van complete with Cossie engine conversion on LPG. Seems to go and work well.

There's a guy on the MLR running his Evo on the stuff as well, and it's something I'm seriously considering having done around 400 odd miles recently in my brother's LPG converted Focus Zetec.

Depending on the miles you do, you could easily make the install cost back within the first year.

Very tempting.

It shouldn't affect resale value tbh.

I recently done a rally course with Phil Price and he runs all his cars on LPG, Escort Cossy, WRX and various other cars.

Even if your paying forecourt prices for LPG its still a lot cheaper to run a car on than diesel and that doesn't look to be changing either, since the huge rise in fuel costs we have had loads of enquiries.

Pass I'm afraid Only saw a bit in his Avatar or similar saying he was LPG'ed!

From what I've heard, LPG is good / great for turbo converted cars... but not sure what the reasons are - expect Johnny Bravo could confirm. Something to do with being more det resistant IIRC.

Very tempted to do it, just don't really have Ł1.5k+ lying around to pay out initially.

LPG is a LOT higher octane, so obviously that lends itself well to a lack of det on a turbo car.

You obviously need a quality install though with a fully mappable system.

Loads, 550hp F150 Truck probably being the most powerful.

We probably wouldn't get involved with a Cossy as we tend to work on more modern vehicles which are less likely to have hidden problems and less mileage, have a look at www.gastech.org.uk for more info on LPG, you obviously won't find any info on Cosworths on there but you will get an idea of the sort of things we do.

One of the systems we use does allow you to map the engine properly, we don't actually need it to be that advanced but the feature is there if you wanted to look for more power on LPG.

Just done a google on my area for lpg prices and its averaging 54 pence a litre, with petrol 1.17 a litre it works out Ł2.45 a gallon for lpg and Ł5.31 a gallon for unleaded over say 10,000 miles averaging 27mpg:

Ł907 for lpg
Ł1966 for unleaded if fuel doesn't rise again

That price difference is around half the price (2k) of the sort of conversion that me and jonboy are referring to roughly I believe, although im sure he can confirm or deny that

On average you will lose 2-3 mpg on lpg, conversions cost from 1750 + vat for a 4 cylinder to 2k plus vat for a V8, depending on power output depends on how many other small bits you may need.

The kits we use are what we fit to the new Transits for Ford, very well proven kit.

Get a different ecu with triple map and run LPG on a cossie with whatever power you want.
Use ULTRASEAL and you don't even lose boot space, as no spare needed then, you ca even gain by removing spare and the foam piece above the spare wheel.
LPG in "certain" places as little as 38p litre, the only difference is it does NOT have a STENCH agent in it, as used for HEATING, so if you have gas heating maybe a switch over!!
The tiny amount of mpg lost is more than covered by oil that does not need changing so often.
My LPG xr4i used to do 25,000 miles between changes, and it was pretty clean when changed, as no carbon in it like you get from liquid petrol.
They do tend to run slightly hotter, but plugs also last a lot longer, they are MUCH MUCH smoother, will start from a frozen winters day cold start no problem(system dependant), are quieter too, you can smell a tiny lpg smell at times but only slight.
If you did not want to go different mappable ecy type you can get a AEB wolf "N", which is a spark advance unit, just for when on lpg.

Ultraseal ? tire weld ?

Totally agree with LPG vehicles running smoother though, my own cavalier is VERY smooth.

The BRC Sequent series of ecu's can do spark advances, its that system we fit to the new Transit

Where on earth did you read that ?

Do you not think that fuel is likely to get to Ł2 a litre which will still make LPG even more of a saving

Don't bank on that, if fuel goes to Ł2 a litre and LPG only goes up slightly its still a MASSIVE saving.

The Government have no reason to tax it, its the Garages taking the piss, not the government.

My jeep runs LPG, if it didn't I wouldn't have it cos I couldn't afford it. When the capri is done that will have an LPG tank in the back aswell.

Thats something that doesn't often get mentioned on LPG kits. I remember my two Granadas I ran on LPG. When I changed the oil after 6000 miles, it came out virtually the same colour it went in.

I'd rather not go anywhere near that cheap stuff tbh.

It can be more hassle than its worth, like anything you get what you pay for.

do you know or had any experiance with the vogas kit? thinking about getting one for the missus car (mk5 xr3i). are lpg kits very easy to fit & map & also to change from car to car when she changes her car. also whats the deal with the certificate of fitting, in the real world is it really needed?

it's usually required by your insurer - although not necessarily when you take out the policy, they would definately want to see it in the event of a fire

see, i like the sound of this as i have a 3.9 v8 and 2.8 v6, but have too heard that prices of lpg are going to be going up alot soon. they've gone from about 40p to 65p ish a litre around here over about a year, which is a scary thought if prices continue to escalate in that way, imho cycling is probably the cheaper alternative.

there is a wirte up in one of the recent ppc's where it explains that although it's got a higher octane rating, it's got a lower calorific value as it's measured in litres not kilo's

or words to that effect

i'll see if i can dig it up

but you overcome that dojj by boosting more and stuffing more of it in there as the higher octane rating allows you to
