Default Any of youlot know about Timberframe Homes or live in one?

Are they any good? Alot of websites say they offer better insulation properties, last as long as any brick and mortor homes, seem cheap to erect. And from the photos I have seen dont look 1/2 bad.

So once the shell is up. How do you then make it look like a house? I assume the bricks are not normal dimention bricks but more of a decorative feature?

Any knowledge appreciated on this.

Lee you need to get watching Grand designs.

Dont need to use bricks outside either.

The thermal properties can be better or worse.. depends on how you spec it.

Basically with timber frames the world is your oyster.. but if you're after doing your own house there are SHIT loads of other alternatives.. depends what it is you want to do.

they use normal concrete blocks on the outside they use metal clips from the timber kit house to the block exterior.its all they build up here in the cold north.ul get the timber kit house wind and water tight in about a week or so depending on size with the block work and roof work then to be done but all the inside workcan be done as soon as the timber frame is up!

I do like the idea of the inside bit. I know its sad but I could spec for however many power points/Network points and put every thing where I want. The problem is alot of sites want money before they give any information which is fair enough.

its cheap as fook my cousin built his own house did most off the timber work himself plumbing and roof work then got mates in to do the other stuff.lived in it for 8 years sold it for over double what he spent and is now building the second one more or less mortgage free even people who use a contractor to build two houses were only ending up with maybe 30grand mortgages its whore o cheap the only coont is getting land and planning permision and somtimes if u get a plot in a sceem of houses they will only let u use there builders and stuf like that.

Not sure if this is the type of building you're thinking about, but I stayed in this building in Scotland earlier this year.

One of my friend's is planning on building a similar sized one, on a budget of something really cheap - like cŁ150k IIRC

We had 10 people staying in this one, and it wasn't crowded at all.

It was freezing outside, but inside was solid, warm and really well built.

I really fancy one myself The hot tub on the balcony area upstairs was a bit of a clincher!

A load of web sites do home kits.
My parents have a nice bit of land that dads willing to sell to me on the cheap. The timber frame constructions do seem to have a load of advantages. Especially as the family has a whole host of trades.
Dads with Transco so is Corgi in plumping and heating etc etc

Seems a mixed one this . Do you mean a timber house like the one SiB posted or a timber framed house? Timber framed houses are just like normal houses only instead of an inner blockwork leaf it is timber studwork(framing) which is then insulated and plasterboarded...they still have brick/stone skins externally.

Lee I think your on the right tracks mate. At this stage its just doing some research. The skins you mention are they full brick? Or are they like brick tiles/brick effect facing. YOu will have to excuse my very poor terminology here.

I guess if you look at a Ł25K Timber frame. You;d be looking at another rather large chunk to then have a brick skin build around it.

Its a full proper brick skin mate. The frame work goes up first which is like mass studwork basically. then the roof goes on and all the building is watertight before a brick is layed!!! The framing has insulation fitted and then wrapped in a membrane. The brick skin is tied to the frame work using steel ties that fix to the frame work and bed into the mortar of the brickwork joints...

This is THE norm in Australia. Its becoming very popular over here but when i build my own house it will be the traditional way Cant do with the hollowness and falsness of timberframed houses Dont feel right

BTW on an averaged size 4 bed house youd be looking at about 7k for a brick skin inc mat/lab...

Hi Alistair,

It was a Golf course resort thing called Piperdam, 5 miles outside of Dundee.

They had a few of these buildings, and loads of posh big houses for the rich people! Lots of nice cars there, and then us lot in Cossies and Scoobs etc!

Inside pic:

Outside pic (our place in the background poking out from behind the trees):

Random Cossie in Scotland pic for no reason :

Two of the houses i've owned have been timber framed. Most of Milton Keynes are timber framed too. They look like normal brick built houses from the outside, I think most new houses are now tbh as its cheaper and quicker.

You'll find some mortgage lenders are a bit iffy on lending on them but most of the big names are fine.
