Default welded diff tastic!!

just got the beemer back on the road with my welded diff! and my god its a pain on tight cornering in car parks etc...i waited for my dad to go inside before i turned around on the drive as i didnt want the usual "is it broken?" remarks!lol,but...it comes out nicely out of junctions and feels nothing short of safe once speeds over 5 mph are attained (any cornering under that and it skips about a bit!) now bring on the drifting!steve im ready for my first lesson!

Already told you 1st easy lesson, 30mph odd in 2nd, turn normally round the corner, kick the clutch, easiest/safest/slowest way to learn!

Aside from that, ill show you when we go get the car 2moro

But no, your sooo wrong, welded diffs are dangerous/evil/etc etc etc, honest

Aliens? Welded diffs.

Hitler? A welded diff.

Old dear welded the diff on her scooter, then look what happened...

Princess Di's death explained...

Went shopping to tesco, but put a 3way on the trolly, and it was a disaster.

I knew I shouldve listened to all those people whos never tried one in their lives but heard all the internet bullshit rumour. Damn

If i get 318is as a project car the diff is going to be welded straigh away.

Good luck with the learning

marco- its not that bad, only times its REALLY noticable is under 5mph, and ive done a lot of tight turns n reverse parking with it, even with a massive omega in the tiny work parking spaces, its not too bad.

a lot worse stuff you get with modded cars than that anyhow.

if you went from a standard car to a car with a welder, and you wasnt used to the downfalls of modded cars, youd properly hate it, but like all modded car stuff, its a bit of a comprimise.

its judders a bit, people think your cars a bit shagged if they taking any notice at the time, but when im driving a welded diff car to work and back, even tho its 60miles each way, you only notice it in a bad way for i dunno, 30secs a time, a few secs maybe twice or 3 times on the journey when doing very tight turns very slowly.

and TBH a tight plated diff feels exactly the same, tho if anything they can be worse as then you can get clonking etc too as well as the juddering, depending how they set up.

for me anyhow, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages, it gets to the point now when i almost cringe when a open or gay light lock viscous diff doesnt properly lock both wheels.

a proper hard locking plated one is better, but 50quid tops compared to 700+quid, it makes a lot of monetary sense.
and on the performance side, it beats a open one hands down

by the sounds of that , it does seem it's like a plated diff when set for full on race use

as for the VC you will be suprised how good the work once they have been uprated , i agree the standard vc isn't much kop , i never rated the standard unit

yeah, it realy is very very similar in its action to full race plated mate

if anything they a little more antisocial as you can (from the cars ive been in with em) hear the plates clonking away too on the v.low speed stuff.

main difference (ie advantage of the proper diff) isnt on that slow speed stuff, its when actually giving it some.

a full race plated they generally call a 2way as its locked almost totally on accell and decel, but when coasting it unlocks, which as you know is handy!

but with a welder they jokingy called 3way, as in they obv never unlock even when off the throttle, meaning you cant help save yourself from a spin by letting off the gas by letting off to unlock the diff, like you could with a race plated one.

its not a huge hinderance, esp if you not used to a 2way, but obv its nice.

its just something nice i cant afford

about uprated VCs, ive never had one, but they seem ok, only issue with them ive noticed from a mate having one, is they kinda universally increase the lock, on, off, and coasting, so to get to a locking level as good as a race 2way its pretty much locked full on like a welder.

but can imagine a VC just a bit more uprated would be a godsend

wish i had experience of all this when i still had my 3dr!
