Jus use Isopropyl Alcohol, works just as well, less likely to give you cancer, and easy to buy from Maplins etc as its used to clean computers etc etc

But handy if he swallows a load of anti-freeze coolant by mistake.
(Read the 100% water / antifreeze thread)

Guys - i'm really hoping you're not using Ethanol in aquamist systems?

You need to be using Methanol... At a minimum amount to lubricate the pump shaft - at a greater volume if you're wanting the benefits of a meth/water mix...

Steve - IsoPropanol Alcohol (IPA) is ok

Didnt think it was an issue at alll on Aquamist pumps, could use straight water if want?

I know, hence my words

IIRC that scientificly itd be best (for performance reasons) to use Water, Methanol, and summat else (IPA maybe, I forget), as the heat absorbsion propertys of them all work kinda sequentially so work better than 1 type, even if the 1 type is the best as a single coolant.
Isothermic bollocks that I dont understand, was detailed stuff on the Aquamist forum that im not sure exists anymore.

in my Erl water inj i use curtain screen wash, as some have Methanal or Propanol in it, which is whats recommended by ERL.

And they Say MOST NOT use Ethanol, which is in most anti-freeze and some screen wash.

The way you can tell

Methanal and propanol is has a low Odour
Ethanol is high Odour

A lot of kits are sold with race spec pumps - and on these you do need to put a dash of methanol in to lubricate the pump shaft.

The less technical explanation goes along the lines of:

Dip your finger in aftershave/alcohol based spirits - then blow on it. Feels very cold for a short period of time.

Dip your finger in water - then blow on it - doesn't feel as cold, but it feels cooler for a lot longer.

By mixing methanol and water - you get the benefits of it being colder than water - and it stays cooler for longer.

Simple enough?

Good point mate

But IIRC if you use water and 2or3 different chemicals (which ones escape me right now) you get an even bigger effect, or something

True enough Steve - there are a handful of other 'ingredients' - but knowing that a percentage of aquamist users struggle to remember to fill the thing up with water - asking them to perform A Level chemistry tasks on a regular basis might prove tricky

ROFL

What sort of mix would be best you think? See soo many combos talked about, fuck knows whats best.

I know water is DEFFO cheaper than methanol tho

Right - FFS don't any of you boys go trying this without a wideband lambda, datalogging and enough cash in your back pocket to rebuild an engine

But...

This mix should theoretically should work - it sees the introduction of Nitromethanol. The same fuel thats used in top fuel/funny cars.

Nitromethanol's chemical formula is CH3NO2, to compare, petrol is usually composed around C8H18.

If this was added to a H20 (Water) and CH3OH (Methanol) mixture of around 47% CH3OH to 45% H20 to compose the remaining 8% - running alongside maybe 2 grades colder plugs - then a gain should be seen.

The problem is trying to stop the Nitromethane seperating whilst mixed with the water and methanol - if this happens then one minute you'll be running rich, the next lean.

The other option involves looking into nitropropane - but we'll save that till i'm less hungover

Not that you'll care i imagine

But with ample intercooling and the correct compression ratio, this shouldn't be necessary! But I digress

True enough - i'd never suggest water injection be used to produce power in so much as using it as a det suppresant to achieve huge gains - more of a safety measure.

I've just sorted a setup out for a friend whereby his system is not only set to come in at 1 bar of boost - its set to only come on at 1 bar of boost where ACT's exceed 40 degrees...

The number of people who forget to fill their water injection tanks is scary - hence why the engine should still be safe to run even if the tank runs dry or a pipe blocks etc.

Thats common practice for water inj to be triggered by boost, act, and TPS.

i run my water inj setup using the washer tank, that way i can make sure i have water, whilist driving.

Aye, on your map based systems - this was a modified 1S system

i have water injection as a safety measure only, i.e my car was mapped without WI so its safe without. but if a blocked injector or other fault occured, may put 1 or more cylinders at risk/lean, then the water should reduce any detonation to below damage stage and hopefully i will notice a performance problem and investigate before a rebuild is needed.
