I have an st24 at present and i'm thinking of changing to st220 but have checked the torque against the diesel and it seems the diesel has alot more torque than the 220 at lower revs, but i want to have at least 200bhp, is it possible to do this to the diesel and keep it reliable, as i'm struggling to justify the 20 odd mpg for st220 when the diesel has more torque.
thanks for any help

for 200bhp you will need a intercooler upgrade which is the same as the focus 2.5 st's so uprated one of those will do.
A cone filter, cat back exhaust+decat will help to and a chip.
for the chip see stu @ msd or get a dream science obd unit
there is a chap out in belgium who runs a st tdci mondeo with a hybrid stage 1 turbo, uprated intercooler, cone filter,ss exhaust+decat and dream science obd unit running 230 bhp and 370lbft.
The chap is called david daniels he owns a belgian tuning company street performance
he sells the turbo's for Ł300 you need to add shipping to the uk also
david@streetperformance.be
here is some info on the exhaust
The Ford Mondeo ST TDCi exhaust system is available from:

My ST TDCi made 160.2bhp & 300 ft.lb torque as standard a few weeks ago.
If you are planning to increase the power in the ST TDCi (even if your not aswell), get the Focus ST brakes. The standard ones are crap. Lots about this on STDrivers forum. All you would need is the front calipers, disks, pads and lines. They bolt straight on. Just upgrade the pads on the rear. Best place for the calipers is a scrappy or eBay. Their about Ł200 each new I think.
I get 35mpg approx around town doing short trips but used to get 47 - 49mpg on longer trips.
Insurance on the ST TDCi is suprisingly cheap. I had mine when I was still 22 with 4.5 years NCB (I changed cars half way throught the year).

Took the car to Stu & Kenny at MSD , well its certainly different , unsure what i was expecting as i have a fully modded Rs500 witch throws you in the boot on boost "lol"
the mondeo is refined and a surprise to those behind when the see the oil burner badge , i am pleased, proper car now , it wasn't bad before either.

oh rite cool
it would of been better to fit the exhaust before you got it remapped tho
then you wouldn't of needed to get it remapped again to sort the fueling and the extra power out.
there is some info on exhausts above that i posted, also some info on intercoolers and turbo upgrades
if you get a exhaust reconmend someone who does decat he makes them himself and has sold a few, also the performance st focus intercoolers fit a treat !!! those little mods should see some good gain is power and heaps of torque too

Interesting , ive been told focus st 225 brakes fit witch will be done soon , and if your right a intercooler from the same will be sourced , cheers for the exhaust link , there about 30 Min's from me so worth a look .
this car, i dont want it to be huge balls out power , but useable with longevity , ive a Rs500 running huge spec for thrills , the mondy is a every day hack for the wife and i .
ive owned Rs's since 1986 never been without one so know my onions when it comes down to mods with those , but new to the Derv scene so cheers mate .

can pick up the airtec intercooler for the st focus for Ł295 can get in blk or silver
www.autospecialsts.co.uk drop the act temps quite abit over the std intercooler.
One of those new kn air boxes would make a huge difference with a performance cooler and exhaust+decat should see you into the 200bhp mark but will still be good on fuel too
that would give stage1+3 cossie a good run for its money

You worry about low down torque but power is more important (for acceleration) and power is got through high revs in the ST220's case, and it sounds incredibly good when revved high. Much better sounding than the earlier mondeo V6s. ST220s can be got up to 260bhp easily. Even if you leave a St220 as standard they usully have about 230-240. Petrol isnt as pricey as it was last year.....

i got coilovers on mine,
wingspeed decat,
wingspeed exhaust,
wingspeed egr bypass
and a bluefin remap and am nudging 190/195 bhp
awesome car to drive too, many a scared chav out there when done by a diesel with a towbar!
cheers

We have more then 1 car:
https://passionford.com/forum/restor...x-2-2tdci.html
1st car has (had because turbo is sold) a Hybrid turbo and not yet been mapped by me since i'm waiting for the turbo's to get swapped, u can see results of both cars on link.
2nd car is mapped by me on stock turbo with good other mods & with better results so far (even better soon) & without smoke like my car was showing
Good advice for good results : go to Stu as he & kenny are very passionate about what they are doing.

Should u buy the Powergate device u can allways put it back to stock and buy other maps from them (or me
Hope this clears a lot & let TDCi tuning begin, we won't stop before +300Bhp is reached
Love the diesels torque and lazy drive but would buy the 220 unless your on a serious fuel budget. The STtdci is a cracking car but buy wisely!
Why would I buy the 220? A slightly infantile answer below maybe but I'm a free revving petrolhead
Diesels stink and sound like tractors, also once past 5k revs they die!! Oh and fuel pump failure costs a bloomin fortune to sort. The latest BMW diesels are pretty good though
I have run two diesel models through work, a Golf GT170 which seemed faster than it actually was and a Focus 1.8tdci, both good cars in thier own right but insanely noisy and quite frankly boring. The initial wave of torque just dies off to quickly. The golf suffered from a blocked injector and required the whole top of the block be removed just to get to it!!
The days of cheap to buy diesels are nearing an end, manufacturers will all be reverting back to smaller engined turbo petrol units to comply with the new emissions regs, its going to cost a fortune to manufacture clean diesels in the future, I believe there is already an additive that needs to be added to modern diesels exhaust gasses just to get compliant with the latest Euro standard..
On a positive note the STtdci will feel like its pulling like a train in comparison to the ST24
third gear is especially good fun.

having weighed it all up last year,i still dont regret buying the 220.yes it does drink and the cost of fuel isnt helping.but if you want something thats similar to the power of the 220 but just delivers it very differently then a ST tdci isnt such a bad idea.
despite all the running costs im still a petrol head at heart and i dont know if i could make the leap to diesel anytime soon.
but thats just it,your either a diesel kinda person or ....well,your not lol
the 220 may drink but its very refined to drive and sounds immense when you floor it.the power is smoothly delivered from the off to the redline and im someone who enjoys revving to unleash the power rather than letting all the torque shoe you along at half revs.a ST diesel feels sooooo different to drive and its something you either take to or not.
and im the latter when it comes to oil burners and thats no slating, just personal pref.
i came from an ST200 which wasnt a slouch but in comparison to the 220 it feels like coming from a heavy barge to something much more capable and sprinty and seeing as its also a very heavy ford,it never really feels it despite what most think.
the 220 in its stride on a motorway is a very quick car.totally comes into its own.you sit at top gear and rarely need to drop down to pull off or overtake.so i dont even see any loss for not having the torquey tdci version.
it also tops out at 150mph+ so its got nice long legs that makes it feel like the power is everywhere you need it.you might not use 150mpg but its got a ton of range with its power.
