Focus st 2.5 timing issue please help!!
Hi people quick question and a one that I would really appreciate if anyone could help me with bought my focus st around 2 weeks ago 51k on the clock drove it for around 2 days and then a loss of power and weird noise which sounds like its coming from the manifold. A crackling noise however this does not happen when the car is cold and the engine is smooth as silk but once it warms up the crackling noise is there once you get on the accelerator, I'm not mechanically minding but the guy I have working on it has told me the timing is out which is causing the problems but the 2.5 st focus 2006 has variable valve timing ?? And he needs to set it back up but doesn't no the correct degrees or correct way to reset the timing back up of there is a diagram or someone with some knowledge of this I would much appreciate your help thanks in advance Curtis.

To be honest mate if he doesn't know how to time it up I wouldn't be letting him do it. Can't see how the timing would be out. Has he checked for fault codes? If the timing is out it will bring up a code.

Hi mate only code that was on the car mate was p0016 which I'm positive was phase 1 crankshaft correlation I changed the sensor and still nothing ? I've had it just about everywhere local I'm nearly pulling my hair out its been with the same guy for 2 weeks and still no further forward then when I dropped it of day one he is almost certain it's the timing and the noise he said was the flaps hitting the inside of the manifold?? Lol I'm totally unsure, he says he has spun the engine manually so I'm guessing he means the crank and the engine is smooth as silk and that noise isn't there when cold? Thanks for your reply.

There is no flaps in the manifold mate there was on the old st (st170) its hard to say what is wrong with out seeing the car but I don't think it will be the timing mate. is there not a ford dealer you could go to find out what is wrong with it then you can fix it.

Yes ford sent me away mate said that because I had Other people trying to repair the car they didn't want to go over there ground so wouldn't take it on baffled at the minute, the mechanic said the noise was because the valves where firing wrong and there was a flap in the manifold but if the engine is fine compression is fine what else could it possibly be other then timing and the noise is not there at all from cold. Also the power loss lead me to believe I may have bent valves but he said he has ruled that out with the compression test 197 to 201?? Said that's fine for that engine and as you have just said no flap in the manifold mate so god knows where the noise is coming from.

I've got the same code coming up on mine P0016 & P0017 - crankshaft position - camshaft position correlation which suggests that the cam timing is out.
My car went in for a headgasket replacement and the dealer never got it running right afterwards (before I owned it - I bought it with the fault) so it seems that the cam timing is incorrect.
I've checked the timing on the pulleys and seems to be 1 tooth out on the inlet side.
I'll be checking and resetting the vvc and cam timing on Tuesday so hopefully that'll sort it!

Sounds like your having a similar problem to me mate maybe that's what the problem is with mine? When I bought the car the engine management light was on however the guy told me it was because it had a full custom exhaust on and the sensor was disconnected ?? So maybe I've bought the car with this problem ? Anyhow the car was fine when I bought it but 2 days driving it and this? There's a rabbit of but cant wait to get it fixed and get driving it again. Thanks for your reply also.

Is it not covered by a warranty at all? My ESP light came one 2 weeks after buying mine and turned out to be the ABS Pump which costs about £800 to replace. Took it back to the garage and they had it replaced immediately. Hope you find out what it is mate. Also try www.ford.rst.co.uk a lot of folk on there are extremely knowledgeable about this engine

Got round to to checking the cam and VVC on mine today and it was fucking miles out! I was surprised it actually ran!!

What's even more worrying, it was a Ford dealer that got the timing wrong!!!

Awesome mate the guy is starting mine tomorrow hopefully mine has the same problem!! Glad you got yours all fixed he has said today that he is almost certain this is the issue.

Mine took me about 3 hours or maybe even a bit longer, (I didn't rush by any means) i did the water pump too so had to bleed it up etc, I found it a bit awkward keeping the belt on the crank sprocket and getting it round the rest. A third hand was eventually sourced to get the belt on.
The gates kit I fitted came with the self tensioning tensioner so you just pull the pin out.
Worth replacing aux belts while they are off too danny.

Great post. I want to check my timing is correct on my engine before i start it for the first time, where did you get the tool? I imagine aligning it by the marks on the cams to the marks on the cover would the same result?

Cars fixed lads, cheers kd for the pictures cars running sweet as a nut 12 o'clock at night but I can get some sleep now cant wait to go for a blast tomorrow . Thanks for the replys people I really appreciate them all.

There are timing marks on the actual timing belt cover that you line the marks on the cam pulleys up with.
Providing that your engine hasn't been pissed about with, you shouldn't need the tool, just line up the marks and it should be ok.
If you want be doubly sure then you can pop the bungs out at the back of the head where the cams are (make sure you get some new bungs as you will ruin them getting them out - cheap enough), you'll then see the triggers for the camshaft position sensors, you'll need to remove these (Torx 30 bolts. You might want to order a new pair of bolts as one of mine rounded off and I had to remove it with a hammer and chisel, already bought a pair just in case). Once you've got those off, you'll be able to see the slots the back of the cams, much like a Zetec. The slots are however offset ie: one sits higher than the other. As long as the slots are dead straight in relation to the cam cover to cylinder head join, they'll be fine!
