Default engine stalls

went to Trax today and on the way home the engine kept cutting out unless i kept the revs goin by using the accelerator.

its as if there is no oil pressure but i have checked and none of the hoses have come off and there are no obvious signs of an air leak.

This morning i did fill the car up using Tesco 99 S U/L would this have any effect on the car at all?

The car is fine apart from this; no problems what so ever.

Check your idle speed screw is still there. Mine jumped out and wouldn't tick over at all. Also make sure your oil cap hasn't popped off as this will cause the engine to die as well.

hmm idle speed screw could be worth checking as it has been idling a bit randomly recently!

definately not oil cap as i put a locking one on only 4 days ago as a precaution!

Sometimes (before todays problems) the car would idle at 1,200 and sometimes normally say 900 revs? I thought this could be down to the car being hot/cold.

do you reckon this could be the idle speed screw too?

is there any reason why it would change so much?

finally....what is the correct idle speed for the car? bear in mind that i have a kent cam (car hasn't been chipped) wouldn't this affect the idling (more lumpy...?)

thanks.

idle speed - as slow as possible whilst being smooth - put the headlights on etc to load the alternator whilst adjusting. Defo sounds like an air leak. Check vacume hoses at the back of the inlet manifold.

where exactly sits the idle speed screw? when my fans are on the revs drop to about 500 rpm and the engine struggles to stay running
I also noticed that the batterylight lights up very weakly when the car runs, maybe alternator almost dead?

alternator wont be charging much at 500rpm, so light will come on. The idle screw (u can turn it with ur fingers) is underneath the throttle housing, on the right.

UPDATE:

got back from work today started the car expecting it to stall so i revved it then allowed it to idle to see how it did and.....

its now working perfectly again. It was idling just above 1,000 rpm which is maybe a tad high but at least its idling

As you can imagine im pleased thats the car has magically healed itself especially after its poor health yesterday but i am still very concerned as to why it happened in the first place.

Can anybody shed some light on this as ive checked all the hoses going...well almost everywhere and i can't see any obvious problems.

thanks.

UPDATE 2:

took the car out this evening and i gave it a bit of beans. When i got back and let it cool down it begun to idle lower and lower. The water temp gauge was on the 'N' of 'Norm' (quite high).

Do you reckon my idling problem could be down to high temperatures eg is it time for an uprated radiator? or do you reckon it something else?

thanks.

You're suppoed to let it cool down BEFORE you stop

You need a tuner

what would a tuner do? do you reckon the idle speed needs to be adjusted?
