Plasma Vs LCD
Not really sure about Plasma but normal Tv is better than LCD so plasma would probaly would be a lot better.
LCD is digital not analog so they need to convert the image to work on LCD so the image you get is digitally converted with makes it more pixelated. it looks clearer but not as smooth and has rough egdes all around the images, its not like a PC witch has a really good image because a PC puts out a digital signal so its really good but with a analog signal it has to be converted to digital and looks not very good. i prefer normal tube tv's to LCD but. im not sure about plasma screens but i would think they would be better. we had a 52 inch projection telly witch was a pretty good picture even though it was a prejection TV these are pretty cheap, around Ł600 for a 52"

If you have to choose between the LCD and a normal Tv i would go with a normal Tv unless you don't want to take up the extra room, but saying this you might be able to buy a LCD with as good picture as a Normal TV but i havn't seen one as good, have a look in any Tv shop you look at the LCD's and it look like the shop has a bad signal untill you look at the Normal Tube Tvs and it looks Good

Porkie and me both bought Pioneer PDP435XDE (pretty sure that's the number) 43in plasmas for just over Ł2k each.
Nothing short of awesome. HDMI ready, stunning picture (the pictures on discs played through my Denon HDMI DVD player are like nothing you have ever seen), stunning looks, and 2 flights to New York FOC. Money well spent. They were Ł3500 when they first came out about a year ago.
I also have a 23in LDC for the kitchen. That doesn't get used very often...
Got a 42" LG Plasma from John Lewis = Ł1600 plus free 5 year Guarantee. Picture is awsome even compared to my previous Sony 32" normal TV. Any problems with it and i'll take it back. So far its been on about 5 hours a day for 4 months and no problems what so ever. The guy in the shop told me the mythe about Plasmas not lasting very long is complete rubbish.
I've had a 42" Samsung Plasma for 2 and 1/2 Years now. I'm very happy with it. It's as bright as the day I got it and the quality is great. The viewing angle is perfeect from whatever angle. Fast moving images are fantastic on it (LCD's struggle with fast moving images esp football etc) The colours are very good and the display is very bright.
The life of the plasmas now are very long, so long you won't have to worry about it. It was the very early plasmas that were so so, i.e screen burn and dimming after years. Both of these are no longer a worry.
LCD is good for things like text etc so if you want to plug a PC into it or something then ideal. Also would you be happy with a bright red dot in the middle of the screen when one of the pixels goes (or even worse when it arrives!) most makers won't class this as a fault...
Also the price of a plasma vs LCD, plasma is cheaper. Large LCD's are harder to make, i.e the waste to produce one perfect panel is high.
Go for a HD version of a plasma too and make sure it has HDMI or DVI which supports HDCP (Just look for the HD Ready Logo) and then when sky launches the new HD box plug this in and prepare for all your mates to come round and watch the World Cup in HD!!

Manufacturers figures for longevity are closely guarded but I have added some here for your review:
Panasonic: States in new specifications that their new plasma TVs and monitors are good to 60,000 to half life.
Sony: Also now states 60,000 hours to half life in their newest models.
Samsung: Lists 60,000 hours.
Pioneer: States 60,000 hours of use in their new 2005 models.
Sharp LCD panels: States 60,000 hour life.
For consumer use these numbers should be comforting. Plasma Displays are now about equivalent in longevity to LCDs, which typically state 60,000 hours or so life. Consider that these figures are a great amount more than old CRTs, which regularly post life span to half brightness at 25,000 hours. Let's put these hours in perspective. The average U.S. household watches 4 to 6 hours of television per day. Staggering. Taking a mean time manufacturer stated longevity of 50,000 hours of usage, times our average 5 hours per day we come up with over 27 years of usage.

is the free 5 year gurantee always available ay John Lewis? That interests me like!
what contrast ration do you ppl have?

I've got a smallish LCD, and Jon is quite right about it struggling with fast moving images (like football).
However, they say for LCD, the quality is very much dependant on the signal input - hence why when I plugged it straight into the Sky unit, as oposed to it being upstairs in my bedroom, the picture is remarkably better!

IIRC the bottom is 110cm from the floor. It is tilted forward, the bracket is adjustable I thought about putting it above the fire, but we use ours now and again - didn't think the heat would do the screen any good. However, they get quite warm in use anyway, so it might be fine
yours looks higher in the pic. Is that a door or a cupboard on the right?
ok our mantle piece is 116cm off the floor so kinda similar. Its an electric fireplace and i dont think we'll be using it anyway and definitely not if we get the tv up there
just usin the pretty lights on it lol
I already have a wall bracket but dunno if it tilts or no

not quite in the same league as some of the above, but i've had my dell 26" lcd for about 6 months now, and never had a prob with it, pictures pretty good damn in general, and watching football etc etc it seems to be fine aswell
Also got inputs to use it as a computer screen which comes in handy at times
, also plug a camcorder straight in
i duno if dell go as big as 40", but they have some really good deals, mine was only 600, with 3 year next day on site warrenty, and free shipping

Plasmas used to have a short life but they're a lot better now as the figurs someone put up, 60k hours is 10+ years
BUT a mate of mine works for a production company where one of the things they film is a games show on some sky channel [I went there a while ago to meet Cheryl Baker
], they have this area with 4 plasma screens and "burnt" into 2 of them is the Sony Playstation symbol where they've left it on without a game in
it's still there when the TV's turned off

If you bracket doesn't tilt, it wouldn't be a big deal to put some spacers in where it bolts to the TV to make it lean a bit if you want
