Default LCD or Plasma...

noticed a few people on here have plasma's etc, so interested in some views.. Basically, which is best and why.. keep hearing about HD which both LCD and Plasma are capable of..

are there any pro's or cons to these, and if it was your money, whichh would you have..

also, if you have one, wouldnt min#d a pic.. especially if its wall mounted with one of those tilts

not sure if this was a sales tactic or not, but apparently Plasma's have a restricted life.. the gas runs out and the guy in the shop told me, once this happened, there over, dead, finito.. Whereas LCD, they donty have a restricted screen life

Excuse the terrible pic,its well out of focus...

It was the older/first generation of plasmas had issues with how long they would last.LCD's are good but they dont make them in in 42"+ yet...well i think they do but its 6k+ also heard LCD's sometimes have problems with fast moving images

Depends on what Plasma you buy would depend if the quality was shite or not!

LCD is a superor technology, and can work to much higer resolutions than plasma. It's more expensive though.

Westy i have had no problems with fast moving images on mine!
Its a Philips as per the pic below but do not confuse it with the identical looking cheaper inferior onre they also make. Checked out the usual so called 'good makes' and none were a patch on this one
It even has built in ambient lighting

we have two 20" samsung lcd tv's & a 50" sony lcd rear projection tv, they all have good pictures, like Rudey said, you need a good signal for a good picture, we run ours through a digi box & a good exterior aerial.

plasmas can look real good but you still have to think about spending money on good cables , and also if you are going to run composhit or componant . i spent Ł1600 on a plasma tv and about Ł350 on good quality cable and rca plugs. but must say picture looks the dogs

I have a 42" Plasma downstairs and i'm typing this on a 27" LCD on my PC.... for what I want my screen's for (and I dont give a monkey's hoof, what some egg head says on avforums), but my Plasma is staying and my LCD is fine for my PC. In all honesty I prefer the Plasma though for sky and gaming.

It's what YOU find the best (after seeing things in the flesh), not what some mekon says is the best and the latest technology.

Digital TV/SKY picture is worse than a DVD (on certain channels), so don't expect a pin sharp picture from this input (artifacts are quite common on the compression that SKY use). It's certainly acceptable, but not the best.

Just going back to what is qualified as being the best (and this by no means I am suggesting that a Plasma or even my Plasma is the best).....

My mate was buying a screen and said it had to be LCD. I said "Why?" and he said "Well, I want the same picture quality as yours", I said "Well mine is a Plasma", he said "Seriously????". Just goes to show peoples conceptions on what they have heard and relate to.

The amount of pixels in plasma screens varies a LOT and a whole load of them will be no good for HDTV when it comes out next year, some are only 480 lines I'm hopeing my 42 inch Hitachi will interface OK with the new signal as it has 1024x1024 pixels and gives a very nice picture, some of the Sky transmission quality is shite though and shows up on a big screen especially where there is moving water for some reason as you can see the individual blocks that make up the picture. DVD's do not have this problem though.

That's a direct result of sky trying to push so many channels down, they have to adjust the bandwidth available to each and every transmission, some are adjusted so low that the quality suffers a lot.
Sky only gives high bandwidth to the programs they feel "deserve" it.

They are not as compressed as sky

A large screen will show up more imperfections in the signal quality, it's like putting a magnifying glass to a stamp, you suddenly realise that the sharp picture you were looking at isn't all that sharp underneath.
The sharpest picture will always be on the smallest screen.

LCD's don't suffer from screen burn as much as plasmas (or is it the other way round... can't remember).

For HDTV, your set must accept DVI or HDMI or Component (HDMI becoming the defacto standard tbh). If the screen can accept a progressive scan signal... all is cool!

The native resolution of the screen has nothing to do with whether it is HDTV compatible or not. Who ever told you that needs a jolly good thrashing!

My Screen happily displays up to 1080i (the full del monte of Hi-Def) but my native res is only 852x480!

Always best to find out the "chuff" from the "chaff".

Mine has a DVI input so with luck it will work
Do you know what Sky are going to be charging for the new decoder?

Just be careful if you buy an LCD as anything with an LCD screen can suffer from dead pixels. It's not a real common issue but it does happen, and the place you bought it has an obligation to exchange it if you get one and it has this.
