Anyone know about routers? (tech folk)
Basically i have 2 different routers in the past year, one which worked well was a "Dynamode" jobbie, id never heard of it but it worked well until recently, it just randomly stopped working and the "link" light kept flashing.
So i plugged in my old adsl speedtouch modem and that took a while to connect but i was up and running, then i noticed it was half my normal speed? is this perhaps the reason why the router dropped connection maybe? anyway i went away for the weekend so i plugged the router back in to see if it would connect on its own while i was away and it did, but then i was only using it for an hour and it dropped again.
So now im back to using the old speedtouch modem, but again it seems to be below my "normal" speed.
Im not too clued up on routers but im guessing theres a connection(no pun intended) between my line speed slowing down AND my router suddenly ceasing to work?

do the speedtest thing and see what the difference is
i was with someone (can't rememebr who now) for years and they sent me some live box thing, which i could never get to work
so i plugged the old modem back in again and whereas before it was running at a max of abour 2.0 whatevers it was all of a sudden running at 6.1
and the only thing i'd done was get the modem/router changed
then they said that ebcause i wasn't using the facility they would remove it

Your with Orange then dojj, i could not get the livebox to work properly when they sent me one, think it must be 2-3 years ago now? the thing was disconnected more than it was connected
Half the speed could just be down to numbers of users at exchange, personally though i would be buying a new router if it worked for an hour then stopped could be due to overheating etc
or could be like jim says as its speedtouch which iirc are quite old?

Check the signal to noise ratio, below about 8 the router has a hard time keeping the line connected. if its low, try removing the facia from the master socket and plugging the router directly into the connection that lies behind. If the snr improves then it could be poor wiring within the house, if it remains low then could be wiring from exchange to your house.

i know they had loads of issues with their service being shit a while back, just call them up and tell them the box has stopped working and to send you out a new one
Tried new filters and also im only able to receive 1mb where i live, so obviously the speedtouch should be able to get to those speeds or near to it? not half like im getting, and plus im sure i was using it years ago and i was getting the same speed as i USED to get on my router(i.e very very close to 1mb).
Rang orange and they said they need 3 speed tests each 4 hours apart before they can say anymore

I will, its no problem im just saying i already know something is wrong without having a whole day doing inaccurate online speed tests
but if it keeps orange happy.
It wont connect mate, so i cant get that infomation at the moment.
I do have a little diagnostics page for the speedtouch modem though, but im not sure if that info is on there. Theres loads of numbers etc but i cant see attenuation or snr

I have found that my connection speed fluctuates wildly and can be shit for a few days, then good for a few days.
As said though, as they're cheap it would be worth investing in a new router if you're at all unsure about it.

if your other router works and this one doesnt, CHANGE THE ROUTER
you could ALSO have a connectivity problem, but the sounds of things we know the router is fooked anyway

They all seem to ask for that as a standard issue 'fob you off' comment.

The only reason im posting this and not saying " its probably a duff router" is because at exactly the same time my internet speed dropped half of what it normally is, which makes me think its not my equipment. With me now?
Ok the router is now working again, i just left it a couple of days(it was still on) and then restarted the pc and router together, turned both on and it connected, but im still running half my usual speed.
Question, would a low internet speed be the reason why my router doesnt like connecting anymore?

snr margin: downstream 7.0/ upstream 7.0 db
line attenuation: 51.5 downstream/ upstream 31.0 db
Im a little bit geekish i suppose but that means nothing to me
Would suggest to me that it's a poor line. Like I said before with an SNR below 10 the router has a hard time to keep the line connected. Try the router in the master socket and see if the snr improves. If it's in the socket behind the facia on the master socket this should disable all other extensions iirc but I would disconnect any phones, sky boxes etc. Your isp should be able see the router from their end and do a basic test but they will probly recommend you bet a BT line test done.

So my router is doing damn well being connected at a 7...........

how far do you live from your exchange? those figures indicate youve got a bit of a poo line.
you you reported this as a fault to your ISP yet? i suspect there is a fault with your line

Yeah i did report it yesterday but as above they wanted 3 speed tests first at 4 hour intervals, so i did that but yet to phone them back with the results.
If there is a problem with my line what exactly will happen? and who would be responsible for fixing it?

your ISP will be responsible, if its a BT problem they will have to speak to BT.
a line attenuation like that indicates a line distance of about 4 miles. so either your line is bad or you are unlucky enough to have the cabling go right rounfd the houses!
to eliminate a problem with your own cabling plug your router into the test socket. this is the main BT phone socket, the one that has a removeable bottom half. unscrew the bottom half and plug the router into the socket behind the plate (it'll be obvious) then redo your tests and post up uyour line attenuation.
also get bt to do a quick free line test here:
http://www.bt.com/consumerFaultTracking/
also do a quiet line test by dialing 17070 so see if you have any audiable interference on the line
