Default Home Networks - HELP!

Heres the script:

Been wanting to install a home network (wireless or hardwired) so my two PC's can share the same internet connectoin, files, printer and scanner.

Ive already tried the wireless NTL kit, which was no use; went to PC World (big mistake ) bought i kit which i was assured would work - only for it to not work either. I think alot of the problems are down to XP's absolutley shite driver manager

If your on NTL what do you use? Both my PC's are high specced and are well above what is required by the hardware and software specs for networks.

Anyone know any companies that will install home networks in Glasgow, or even any that could give me some decent advice? As ive spent a grand on a new computer, only to find i can't use it on the net because of this

Ive tried the usual Yellow Pages numbers, none of them seem to be interested as their more involved in companies than home IT.

NTL Kit:

I follow all the instructions, install hardware and software in the correct order (apprently its succesful installation) but the PC with the router doesn't recognise it is connected. Ive been through all the driver options etc for it. Strange thing is that even when the router isn't noticed by the PC it's connected to - the second PC with the wireless adapter seems to pick up the signal and i can access the net on it, but i still can't share files or resources.

I then tried a new kit from PC World that involved installing wireless network card into the available PCI slots, then each computer didn't recognise that they were there.

The problem will be nothing to do with the wireless signal and construction of the house - it is newish - cordlessphones work fine.

Three of us have now tried installation each of the two network systems many times without much luck! We are all highly competent with IT.

As you can imagine after spending of 300quid on this shit, im eager to get a network that will actually work.

if you havent, try both and then try pinging the router. one of my customers is having the exact same problem that the pc isnt recognising the connection and its turned out to be windows thats the problem.
I did try that at the time, although not very methodically i must admit

I'm going to buy another kit tommorrow - ive returned the others, surprise i met a few others at the customer services desk doing the same - so i'll see how it goes.

Thanks for the advice

Yes i do have a seperate modem.

Yeah i saw that on the NTL website, strange..they now seem to encourage the use of the linksys system rather than the Actiontech (crap) they advised to use before.

Hello m8, the easiest way to do this, is to get a linksys wireless router / hub and plug your nthell cable modem into it, then, get a wireless usb adaptor for the other machine(s) you want on your network and hey presto. I got a linksys router, put it on my main pc, set the wireless up and connected my playstation 2 all in about 10 mins
