Vista folder permissions: can't save to them.
I can't seem to find the correct info on permissions to allow me to save updates in the "programs/ relevant folder" folder.
When I attempt to d/l and save into the relevant subject folder it states I don't have permission to save to that location.
I have checked the properties of the main folder and each program folder and I have access to it & the isn't archived.
I'm currently saving it to my personal profile in a "update download" folder i have created in the short-term. it seems that as these are manufacturers default files and not on "my profile/ user" section that is why it won't let me do anythnig with those folders.
Any ideas ??

Im not entirely sure what your trying to achieve here anyway, if you download a programme for example i save it to my desktop then when its download double click it, install it and then it goes into programmes folders as default, then delete the setup file on your desktop, job done?

whats wrong with letting windows save it to wherever it wants? i cant see you wanting to change it?
like if download msn right now it would save into c: programme files> msn messenger, why would you want to change that? it makes sense for it to be saved there
your on vista arent you? if you right click on any folder doesnt matter what one, then go to properties and click on security tab, then go to advanced and check that you have full control.
Show me a screenshot if you can so i can compare the settings with mine and see if there the same.
Also have you always had this problem even when you first got the pc?

Might be getting somewhere.
here's an example....
Tried to save a pic into a program files folder:

Here's the properties: as you can see it says "full control" for everyone:

however, when I right-click the space then select 'properties' it seems the "user/shawn" doesn't have full permissions. I take it that this is the identity the comp is looking at when I attempt to save something?

Will change this to 'full' then try again.
Nope, won't let me edit the permissions

been like this since I got it. Only noticed it the 1st time I tried to save a program file update.
On a side note, 3rd pic: System monitor google side-bar: Any reason that the memory is 50% constant in use?

Oh shawn must you pick my brains so late at night
Only kidding, go onto control panel, user accounts and then click on change account type(hover the mouse over the text to see where to click) and then hit continue, then check your set to administrator and not standard user.
50% ram(or memory) usuage is fine, im just sat on windows live messenger and firefox and im using nearly 40% of my 2GBs of ram, its normal for vista as it uses alot more memory than xp/me etc, especially with the funky Aero glass turned on, so dont worry about that

Have checked that, it's already set as admin. I am the only account user on there and 'admin' level is default with 1 user by the looks of it, which is what you said in the 2nd post.
Ram usage: I thought it might be ok as there's lots of things running in the background all the time, but thought I'd ask whilst it was on the pic.
Next !!
Heres what he said
"The problem is that he does not have Writing capabilities. Just reading. So when you are at the screen in the 3rd screenshot, click first on Advanced. Then on the "Owner" tab and then "Edit at the bottom of the window. Take ownership of the directiory. Then, close the windows until you are at the one window in the security tab (the one on the left of the 3rd screenshot) and now click "Edit" to edit the permissions. Then, select your username, and now that you are the owner of the file, you can change its permissions, so under your user, click "Full Control". (If you are applying this to all of C:\ which I suggest you dont, since that includes all system files and will take a LONG time. Just take ownership and full control over the directories he will be saving into.)
Now, close the windows (no restart is needed for this) and you're done!
Try and save into one of the directories you just took ownership and full control over."
By the 3rd screenshot he means this one

He made a good point of not taking ownership of the WHOLE c: because that will take forever, just do it for where ever you want to save in
I hope that sorts it out for you, you shouldnt really have to be messing about with file permissions though, has anyone been playing around on it or kids?

Sorted. Another lucky winner.
Have moved my d/l update & scanner files into Program Files successfully.
These permissions were set like that from Dell; no-one has been on the comp bar me & the missus. We don't have any kids and she wouldn't have been doing anything like this neither.
Bloomin Dell
Please reply on the forum with a big smilie and huge thanks from me.
And have some more yourself for sorting it out on my behalf.
Moved those files above ok, but if i try t osave something in there it STILL won't let me.
Attempted to d/l winrar and save the files into Program files....

I have two types of permissions for me personally (automatically set-up). One is as the user/shawn-pc which is full control, the other is administrator/shawn-pc/administrator. Both have Full Control capabilites and in the attributes they display are all ticked inc creating files/ folders.
I have taken ownership with both of these ot the same effect: I do not have permission blah blah.
The other two permissions are Authenticated Users and SYSTEM. These also have the same full control permissions and capabilities.
I've read the help guide on taking ownership and permissions, etc but it's what you and the other site said already.
you said it was sorted so i assumed you tried downloading/saving stuff? obviously not
Ive updated your thread on the pc forum.
Im not saying i cant be arsed or anything like that but why dont you sign up to it? then you can read the replys and type yourself, you will sort it out much quicker that way and you can speak directly to them
http://www.jcxp.net/
If you do sign up, once you have actually signed up, click on "enter the forums" top right, you will see it says "general" then below that "operating systems" click on "windows vista/server 2008" then inside there you will see a thread near the top called "File permissions issue"posted by Jonny_uk(me), thats the thread i started for you, so you can tell them all "im the guy with the issue"

but these were already saved onto the comp, I simply moved them after giving myself the ownership.Today I tried to d/l a program and use the 'auto-folder-location', which was program files as default..but got the result posted above.
Thanks for the vote on joining: problem is I'd be well out of depth on there and wouldn't be able to contribute much the other way round.
NO no no dont worry about that, your not obliged to do anything, just join and then if you ever have any issues post, you dont have to visit like you'd visit this site.
Theres loads of members aswell so you'd just blend into the background.

Yes, the ones before I joined. I read it as they thought I was thick for attempting to save my photos and docs into there and also giving everyone access (on a single-user home computer)

Hmm its getting abit quiet on that thread on Jcxp shawn, i think maybe everyones said their piece
i reckon you should just get in touch with Dell and explain to them the problem, say you have spent a week(or however long) trying to sort it but you cant.
I dont suppose they gave you a vista disc did they?

Will check on the disc, but I don't think so
Is that just to re-install vista over the top of the current one to see if it defaults the permissions etc ?
Cheers.
Didn't mean anything to sound arsey...just the way I read it made them sound like I was being an idiot trying to save into there.

yeah so you can save all your stuff on cd/dvds and then do a clean install, and its not to see if it works, it WILL work, like i said ive installed vista last week and ive had no problems saving anything, nobody should really, so all i can think of its something Dell did by accident or something
If you havent got a vista disc then you can jot down your serial number(right click my computer icon, go to properties and then look near the bottom for the product ID) and then just download vista from the torrents, install it and use your serial number on it.
If you dont fancy that you could just buy a disc for Ł60 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/123052
It is honestly sounding like you have 2 options though, ringing Dell and getting them to sort it or reinstalling windows

GTi_iTG Will try Dell I think before re-installing items.
Alex_86 I have full control as a user and admin.

I haven't made a new user to try. I don't want to create it and confuse things even more.
