Right, we're sorted.
It seems that unless Vista knows what a file is and where it's coming from (like an OS update), it will not let you save directly into program files incase it's harmful to the system...even if you are admin and have ownership, etc.
The way round it is to save into another location and then move it into Prog Files after it's been installed and verified (through the "allow unknown program" pop-up).
Time to find that d/l program to trial it.

im just confused mate
So you cant do that, ive never actually tried doing that
What happens when you save stuff to your desktop? that should work because thats what i always do, as when you download something its easy to find the file because its sat on the desktop

No, it won't let you: part of the Vista Security he said.
I don't d/l to the desktop: if it's a program, it goes into Program files..well used to on my old comp.
Now it seems the way is to d/l the actual file to another location/ folder, run it & then save into Program Files on install once Vista is happy you've allowed it's content.

Yes, I can do that, but only if I chose not to save it straight into Program Files.
I then right-click the file & Run As Administrator, it then asks to Run/Cancel. Click "Run" and an 'unauthorised program wants to access your computer: Allow/Cancel ' pop-up appears.

Ok so you CAN download and save files then? its just your trying to do something ive never done
Just do what i do its easier, download ANYTHING to your desktop, then sort it out from there, whether it be a programme that needs installing(double click on it and accept the message that pops up) or if its an MP3 listen to it, then copy and paste into your music folder

I only save music or pics straight to that relevant folder anyway in My Docs
It's only for new programs like Winzip or new hardware (like my scanner) install files that I would save to C:/Prog Files. I know what to do now & you've learnt something too.
Must go on the IT link you posted and reply....

well ive learnt something yeah, but it would have never been an issue to me because i save everything to my desktop so i know where the downloaded files are, then i can sort them out straight away
I guess its down to personal preference really, ive just always done what ive done plus ive only had vista for a week so i can be let off
As long as you can save stuff, i thought you couldnt save anything you downloaded to start with thats why i said join that website, but hey if ever you have anymore issues and im not around then you can use that site
