Default Thermostat problems on the horizon

Good day

In the past week I have noticed on two occasions my temperature drop from about 90 to just over 75/80 then creep back up in about 20 seconds

The first time was on the motorway, coming out of traffic that was crawling in parts, got up to 70 mph and the car seemed to drop to just above 80 then find its way back. I travelled 40 miles back in the evening and it didn't happen again. Today was I crawling through traffic and noticed that once I accelerated up to 40mph the temp gauge did the same.

Now the coolant is filled up to the max and I have a lot of driving coming up so want to know if there are problems ahead for me. The heaters are pumping out the heat, and the car takes a few minutes to get up to temperature of a morning

Let me know your thoughts

Possibly, but if anything the thermostat is opening at too low a temperature so at least you're not going to overheat.

I changed the thermostat on mine last year as it was running a bit low. I once noticed that if I lifted off on the motorway going quite quick, the temp would drop dramatically due so much air going through the rad, before the thermostat caught up after a few seconds.

Thanks for your reply. I have been told to just keep and eye on it and see how it progresses. My friend (who is a mechanic) has told me to just keep an eye on it, could be the thermostat or even the gauge having a wobble.

My only concern is that I have about 2500 miles of driving in the next 60 days so fingers crossed. Whats the labour cost for something like this, 2 hours?

What car? I have changed quite a few of them, I don't recall it ever taking more than 5-10 minutes....

Yeah, depends on the car.
I did mine myself which did actually take about 2 hours but that was with never having done one before and access was difficult with it being a 2 litre in a fiesta.

2006 Focus 1.6 petrol

I will keep an eye on it, if it is a cheap job for a garage to do, I might just get it done

It seems I managed to get it to drop again by putting the blowers on four and heating to the max. Falls down about 8 degrees and then creeps back up

New temperature sensor on it today, showing about 75 degrees as the engine temperature and it takes a while to get there. It is going to garage tomorrow for further diagnostics, talk of it being the thermostat but the heaters are still absolutely roasting.

Any thoughts?

New thermostat went in today but the problem still remains. It now looks to be a calibration problem. Any pointers?
