Default Push button start xr3i

Well lads. I want to put a push button in to start the car but I still want to use the keys to turn on the ignition. Just want to bypass the barrel/Ignition switch really for turning over the engine. I've got 4 wires coming off the barrel. Blue/Black, Red, Yellow and Black. I've got a multimeter to hand and the manual for the car as well with the wiring diagrams if need be. Just need a little guidance here. Thanks

You need to supply the ignition live feed, i.e. position 2 to a push to make switch and then from the push to make switch to the remote starter wire on ignition position 3.

Using the correct gauge of wire of course.

Red will be "Hot all the time" It's either the Blue/Black or yellow and black for the ignition and the starter is the other or vice versa, can't remember off hand!

Check for sure using a meter!

Ok so i checked with the meter and when you turn the key forward to turn the engine the blue/black is reading on the meter. The other red, yellow and black are live with the ignition on or position 2 as you say. So i gather from what you're saying that i need to have the red wire going to the push switch and the other side of the push switch going to the blue/black pos 3 wire?

Sorry I actually have got confused, trying to do to many things at once, the "red hot all the time" is the live feed, that when the ignition switch is turned to position 2 connects red and black/yellow thus giving the ignition power.

When you turn one position further the red also sends power to the remote starter wire, you should also see a thinner yellow wire which is for the radio, this is why when the switch is in position 3, i.e. starter position the radio dies as it sends power to the other two wires.

If you take the feed to the push to make from the "hot all the time" wire, the push starter will be permanently live as well, i.e. if someone presses it it will turn the car over but not start it!

EDIT: I just read that again.Just to clarify the yellow wire is live on position 1. The red wire is constantly live with the ignition off. The black wire is live on position 2(dash lights on). The blue/black wire is live when you turn the engine on pos 3. So going from what you said it's the black wire and the blue/black wire that I need to wire the switch to?

I might have confused you sorry. There's a thick red wire. A thick black wire. A thick blue/black wire and a thin yellow wire as you said. There's no black/yellow. I think i understand what you're saying though. Can i wire it so that the button only works when the keys are in pos 2 (dash lights on)?

The thick red one is live all the time, if you put a meter across it now, you will see +12V.

The way I initially said of doing it would mean the button would only work with the ignition switched on BUT I would not advise it as it may pull to much power from the ignition (Pos 2 circuit) so as always with any advise on a forum, you do so at your own risk!

The black usually denotes a switched live, so this could be the ignition circuit, you can easily see by putting a meter on the wire with the ignition switched on, if you have power then it is the ignition feed, and the remaining wire is the remote starter wire.

Ok i see what you mean about pulling power from the black ignition wire. So i think the route i need to take is the red live wire to the blue/black starter wire and have the keys turned on but there won't be a drain on the black wire. Thanks for the info there Martin.
